Stephanie Tan Sze Ying has spent the last 14 years building her career in Mortgage Banking at Standard Chartered. What has kept the role meaningful for her is the opportunity to keep learning. Working with lawyers, valuers, developers and property agents has helped her build knowledge beyond banking while every client brings a different story and a new challenge to solve 🧠

Early in her Mortgage Banking career, Stephanie’s manager spent time building her product knowledge and closing skills, taking her into the property market and working through challenging cases with her. It was this hands-on guidance that gave Stephanie the confidence to perform well as a newcomer.

Over the years, changing guidelines have required her to keep adapting and learning. When challenges arise, she continues to turn to her team leader to understand what went wrong and find the best solution. And ultimately, it’s the clients who give the role its purpose.

Linnea Malmberg has always been drawn to the international side of banking. After gaining experience in Stockholm and New York, she realised that cross-border work was where she felt most engaged.

That interest eventually led her to Standard Chartered, attracted by the Bank’s global reach and the opportunity to support corporate clients across its international network. Today, working across borders is part of her everyday experience. She collaborates with colleagues around the world, learns from different cultures and brings together expertise across markets to help deliver solutions for clients. Along the way, she’s also gained exposure to new markets and perspectives that have broadened her horizons.

Andrew Clifford believes inclusive leadership is demonstrated through the everyday decisions leaders make and the culture they create. From seeking diverse perspectives when building teams to taking the time to understand colleagues beyond their roles, it's about creating an environment where everyone feels valued. Initiatives such as Coffee Connects, along with opportunities to share experiences, cultures and ideas, help strengthen connection and belonging across teams 💙💚

With colleagues across Uganda, China, Singapore, the UK and Poland, Andrew believes connection and belonging can’t be left to chance. The same thinking is applied to how he approaches development - whether through mentorship, sponsorship or creating opportunities for people to build confidence and take their next step.

His story shows how inclusion becomes real through the everyday: who gets heard, how fairly decisions are made, how people connect and whether they feel able to bring their perspective into the room.

When Vina, Mabel and Sunitha completed an Employee Volunteering survey in June 2022, each independently selected disability inclusion as a cause close to their hearts. A few clicks later, they were connected through a shared purpose and began championing disability-focussed volunteering initiatives across Standard Chartered, forging a partnership none of them could have anticipated.

Their first initiative was a community walk organised by Riding for the Disabled Association - Singapore. The positive response they received from colleagues encouraged them to keep going and they have since worked side by side on numerous initiatives supporting persons with disabilities 🙏

Through early mornings, last-minute problem-solving and post-event celebrations, they discovered a shared commitment to inclusion and a common desire to make a difference. Their friendship then grew beyond this.

Weekend trips to Johor Bahru became a tradition, while holidays in Australia, stand-up comedy shows and evenings spent exploring Singapore gave them more opportunities to share laughter, great food and endless conversations.

Four years later, their friendship feels more like sisterhood. They continue to champion disability inclusion together while supporting one another through work challenges, personal milestones and moments when someone simply needs a listening ear.

Trust, care and consistently showing up for one another turned what started as a professional connection into something lasting.

Curiosity and international exposure have been two constants throughout Clara's career. Having lived in many cities including London, Stockholm, Gothenburg, Singapore, Oslo, Chicago and San Francisco she developed an early interest in working across borders and cultures. That interest led her to roles in Foreign Affairs, Wealth Management and Banking, working with international clients, diverse teams and different industries as she progressed 🏭

Clara shares the lessons these experiences have taught her, the importance of building strong relationships and why she believes enjoying your work really matters. She also talks about the support from leaders and colleagues, opportunities to connect with teams across markets and Standard Chartered's global network that have helped make her first year with the bank both meaningful and rewarding.
