Once the poor relation to fine art, photography is fast becoming the 21st century’s most collectable art form. As the interiors of people’s homes change, and modern tastes develop, photography is finding a place on the walls of homes around the country, in many instances replacing traditional paintings. The market for photography is still young and under-developed outside of the top end of the spe

ctrum (contemporary photographers like Andreas Gursky and the classic vintage photographs of Kertesz and Cartier Bresson), and in comparison with the market in the US, Germany or France, but is growing and currently provides an affordable platform for people looking to buy, not only a beautiful piece of work, but also an investment. Crane Kalman Brighton has been established to provide an affordable introduction for anyone interested to buy, and possibly, collect photography. Crane Kalman Brighton will sell a wide range of work from the best young local talent to some of contemporary photography’s leading lights.

More images here from Tria Giovan’s The Cuba Archive – Photographs 1990-1996

Giovan’s The Cuba Archive is about those who remained and lived in Cuba during the 1990’s – some of the toughest years Cuba has known. Like most things about Fidel Castro’s Cuba that enchant visitors, there is unique beauty but one intertwined with deterioration, isolation, and loss, and Tria’s photographs speak to this arrangement of unequal things...The beauty of these photos is as magnetic as the island - Silvana Pasternos from The Cuba Archive

All images from the series, can be viewed at the Viewing Room exhibition on the gallery website - https://cranekalmanbrighton.com/viewing-room/

All images are available to purchase as signed and numbered limited edition prints in three edition sizes. The book is sold out.

More now on Tria Giovan’s The Cuba Archive – Photographs 1990-1996

In 1996, Cuba: The Elusive Island, was published. The book brought together 100 of these images, along with a selection of writings by some of Cuba’s most important writers. Twenty years later, the images were re-edited, and a second publication The Cuba Archive - Photographs 1990-1996 was published by Damiani Editions in 2017.

Viewing the photographs through a prism of time and change revealed a new more complex view of the work’s historical significance. It is a record of elements that no longer exist and captures Cuba poised on the brink of change. As a body of work born from complete engagement and informed perspective, it is both comprehensive and intimate. As a historic record, it chronicles 1990s Cuba and bears witness to the spirit and integrity of a distinctive, resilient, and complex country and its people.

More works to follow. All images are available to purchase, and more information can be found here - https://cranekalmanbrighton.com/viewing-room/

To coincide with the start of Photo London, and to mark 30 years since the first publication of Cuba: The Elusive Island, published by Harry N. Abrams, we are very pleased to present in a two-part Viewing Room exhibition, Tria Giovan’s comprehensive study of Cuba in the 1990s.

Having first travelled to Cuba in 1990, over the next six years, Tria Giovan took twelve month-long trips, traversing the island numerous times, and taking over 25,000 photographs.

Immersing herself in Cuba’s history, literature and politics, Giovan photographed interiors of homes and businesses, city streets, rural landscapes, signs and billboards, and, most of all, the people, creating a body of work that captured the subtleties and layered complexities of day-to-day Cuba.

Over the next few days we will detail more about the series alongside a selection of these wonderful images. All images are available to purchase, and more information can be found here - https://cranekalmanbrighton.com/viewing-room/

We are very pleased to announce that one of Ellie Davies’ current body of work, Ebb & Flow 6, is included in the Saatchi Gallery’s major Summer exhibition The Sun and The Moon: Art Inspired by the Celestial, exploring how these objects in the sky have influenced art, culture and the human imagination.

Occupying two floors of the Gallery and spanning nine major exhibition spaces, the show presents artworks, installations, and objects that reveal how artists have responded to the Sun and the Moon. From ancient mythologies and early cosmologies to contemporary art and popular culture, the exhibition explores the profound influence these celestial bodies continue to have on human imagination.

The Sun and The Moon: Art Inspired by the Celestial opens on 5 June and runs until 8 September at the Saatchi Gallery, London SW3 – www.saatchigallery.com

We have worked with the Own Art scheme for nearly 20 years, and in that time, it has given the chance for many gallery clients to purchase a work that otherwise might not have been possible as a lump sum purchase, by spreading the cost over a 10-month period.

The Own Art scheme .art has now doubled its loan threshold, giving you more opportunity than ever to purchase the artwork you love!

Informed by research with Coventry University, this change is designed to better support artist livelihoods, unlocking more opportunities for buyers to invest in original art, and for us to support the artists we represent.

You can now spread the cost of artworks up to £5,000, completely interest-free, making it easier than ever to say yes to the pieces you love. To find out more about the scheme, visit www.ownart.org.uk or just contact the gallery.
