Supermarkets are carefully designed to encourage spending. A few small tricks can make it surprisingly easy to add extra items to your trolley.

1️⃣ End of aisle “offers”
Those deals at the end of the aisle catch your eye for a reason. They are placed where you naturally slow down and look. Sometimes they are genuine bargains, but often they highlight higher priced items you might not usually buy.

2️⃣ Loyalty cards
Clubcards and Nectar points can offer good savings, but they also encourage you to choose certain products or brands. Over time, the data helps supermarkets personalise offers that tempt you to spend a little more.

3️⃣ Store layout
Ever notice how essentials like milk and bread are usually at the back of the shop? That is intentional. Walking past more products means more chances to add something extra to the basket.

4️⃣ The “middle aisle effect”
