In April, I am running the London Landmarks Half Marathon with my friend Charlie in support of Abigail’s Footsteps, a charity that supports families through baby loss.

I am not a runner, fitness has taken a back seat, and I am starting from a tough place physically. One week before race day, my family will welcome a new baby. That timing brings joy, nerves, exhaustion, and perspective all at once. It also makes this cause hit closer to home.

Training has started! Sleep will be limited. Emotions will run high. Every mile will carry a reminder of how fortunate we are, and how vital this support is for families who face the unimaginable.

If you choose to sponsor, the link is below. Your support helps this charity continue its work and gives this challenge real meaning.

Thank you for taking the time to read and for any support you offer.

Happy New Year to everyone here. With the festive break behind us and work routines back up
and running, this feels like the point where the year properly starts.

This time of year often prompts reflection on the work I do with clients and the responsibility
that comes with it. The focus stays straightforward and consistent.

• Pensions. Helping people plan for long-term income and future security.

• Protection. Making sure families and businesses have safeguards in place when life shifts
unexpectedly.

• Investments. Supporting long-term strategies built around clear objectives.

As the year settles into pace, the priority stays the same. Clear thinking. Long-term perspective.
Decisions designed to hold up over time.

If anyone needs support or a sounding board across any of these areas during the year ahead,
I’m always happy to help where appropriate.

The value of your investment can go down as well as up. You could get back less than you
invested.

⏰ TIME IS ON YOUR SIDE ⏰ In your 20s, you have the opportunity of the many decades of saving and investing that lie ahead of you.

Thanks to the power of compounding – when the interest you earn on savings or the return on your investments is added to your initial sum – your money can grow at an exponential rate. And the longer you allow this to happen, the greater your chances of growing a significant savings pot. 📈

So, over the course of a 40-year career, for example, investing even a relatively small amount each month could leave you with a substantial sum of money by the time you reach later life. No surprise, then, that Albert Einstein called compounding “the eighth wonder of the world”.

The value of an ISA with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than you invested.

The favourable tax treatment of ISAs may not be maintained in the future and is subject to changes in legislation.

This week is Zero Waste Week! 🌍

Here are five simple things you can do this week (and beyond!) to contribute to a zero waste lifestyle:

1️⃣ Bring Your Own Bags & Containers: Say no to single-use plastics by carrying reusable bags and containers everywhere you go.
2️⃣ Choose Reusable Water Bottles & Coffee Cups: Ditch the disposable coffe cups and opt for durable, reusable options.
3️⃣ Compost Your Food Scraps: Turn your kitchen waste into nutrient-rich compost for your garden instead of sending it to landfill.
4️⃣ Shop Local & Package-Free: Support local businesses and reduce packaging waste by shopping for loose produce at the supermarket or farmers' markets.
5️⃣ Repair, Don’t Replace: Extend the life of your belongings by fixing things instead of buying new ones.

Every small step counts! 🌱

Are you aware that you have a £3,000 annual exemption for gifting, which can be carried forward for one year if unused? You can also use income to fund the contributions to a life policy held in Trust*, which can be exempt if you meet certain criteria.

A parent can gift up to £5,000 tax-free to their child who is getting married.

More exemptions include gifts to charities, and donations to political parties or institutions that exist for public benefit, such as universities, national museums, and the National Trust.

Larger gifts, which sit outside the general IHT exemptions noted above, can also have an inheritance tax (IHT) benefit where, generally speaking, the gift is made more than seven years before death.

This information is based on St. James's Place interpretation of current law and HMRC practice.

Taxation legislation and HMRC practice may be subject to unforeseen changes.

*Trusts are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

CASH-FLOW FORECASTING FOR BUSINESS OWNERS 📈

After your early-stage business has made some sales, it’s tempting to look at your bank balance and think you’re in a great position. However, even with healthy customer numbers and revenue, in a small and growing enterprise, things can get bumpy quickly if you don’t implement sound financial management measures.

One reason start-ups fail around years two and three is that they grow too fast and over-trade. These firms don’t have too few customers, they have too many, and lack the cash to fulfill orders and buffer the gap between orders shipped and payments received.

Proper capitalisation, financial planning, cash-flow forecasting and budgeting are essential to avoid running out of cash 💸
