Last summer, one of our Real Estate agent partners referred a potential buyer to us. During their initial call with her account manager, the client was concerned to learn that exchange rate changes could significantly alter the cost of their intended property in pounds before completion.

While on their viewing trip, the client was ready to make an offer and paid a small reservation fee. They also used us for their deposit. However, for the main payment, the client chose to mitigate their currency risk by using a forward contract to lock in their exchange rate for four months. They secured a rate via their account manager for a €850,000 purchase, with a 5% deposit in GBP.

By the time of completion, the GBP/EUR rate had indeed moved against them. However, with the protection of their forward contract, the client completed the purchase at the rate they had budgeted for, making a saving of over £20,900.
