Olivia Rodrigo reportedly survived a day in a Welsh town on sausage rolls — because her card wouldn't work outside America. It's funny because it's relatable. A declined card abroad has happened to plenty of us, and it's almost never the disaster it feels like. Usually, your card is just doing its job: a sudden overseas charge can look like fraud, so it gets held to protect you. Add foreign-transaction blocks and fees you didn't know about, and you've got the full picture. The fix is a 10-minute check before you fly: tell your provider your travel dates, switch on overseas use in the app, note your card's fees (and always pay in the local currency at the till), and carry a backup method. Understanding how your card works is what gives you real confidence wherever you are. What's your hard-won travel-money tip?

Oil prices are climbing again — and if that feels like one more thing landing on the household budget, you're not imagining it.

Here's the plain-English version of why it matters: crude oil sets the price of petrol and diesel, and it feeds into the cost of generating gas and electricity too. So, when oil moves, the cost of filling up and heating your home usually follows.

The good news is that some of this is still within your reach. Three steps worth a look before prices climb further:

Lock in what you can — if your energy deal is ending soon, check whether a fixed tariff suits your household. The review takes about 10 minutes.
Trim the journeys — combine errands into one trip, keep your tyres inflated, ease off the accelerator. Small changes, every week.
Build a small buffer — even a few pounds set aside before bills rise softens the jolt when they do.

A little planning now helps you stay steady rather than scrambling later. And if money is already stretched, free and impartial help is there — you don't have to work it out alone.

Save this for the next bill, and send it to someone who's bracing for theirs.

Your everyday spending could be quietly paying you back — if you pick the right account for it.

Cashback current accounts are having a moment, and the idea is genuinely appealing: earn a little back on money you'd spend anyway. But the headline cashback figure is rarely the whole story. Here's what's worth checking before you switch.

Understand what you're actually being paid for. Most accounts reward everyday spending or selected direct debits. It's real money — but only if the reward beats what the account costs you.
Check the fees first. Lots of reward accounts charge a monthly fee. The maths only works if the cashback you'd realistically earn is more than that fee. Do the sum for your spending, not the advert's.
Mind the minimum pay-in and the small print. Many accounts need a minimum monthly pay-in or a number of active direct debits to unlock the reward. Miss the condition and the cashback can pause.

The trick isn't chasing the flashiest offer — it's choosing the account that fits how you actually live and spend. That's what turns everyday spending into a steady little boost over a year.

Save this so it's there the next time a cashback deal catches your eye — then run it past these three checks before you decide.

Which would tempt you more: cashback on spending, or a simple account with no monthly fee? Tell us in the comments.

Hottest May on record. Most of us can't retrofit a home overnight — but five almost-free changes this weekend will keep a UK home noticeably cooler and stop the energy bill creeping up alongside the temperature.

Here's the short version of what's in the carousel:

Close blinds on the sunny side BEFORE 10am. Open windows on the shady side only AFTER sundown. Order matters more than effort.

A £15 desk fan, aimed across a damp tea towel or a tray of ice, cools the room you actually sit in for a fraction of what a portable AC unit costs to run.

The same draught-proofing that keeps heat IN during winter keeps heat OUT this week. Foam strip the front door. Brush the letterbox. Draught snake by the sun-facing rooms.

Read your meter today and again on the 1st of next month. A bigger-than-usual jump means you can adjust this month — not be surprised by a statement in three.

The record heatwave landing this weekend is also a quiet bills story.

Fans on overnight. The freezer working harder. An extra wash of bedding. None of it huge on its own — but all of it adds up on the next statement, right when the spring bank holiday is meant to feel like a breather.

So before the long weekend kicks off, we pulled together six small, mostly free moves that keep your home cool and your meter steady:

— Cool the person, not the whole house (a desk fan + an ice bottle goes a long way)
— Give your fridge room to breathe — and check the door seal
— Plan your hottest 2pm–4pm window around a free cool space (library, leisure centre, big shop)
— Don't pack the freezer in panic — a full freezer is good, an overstuffed one isn't
— Close blinds and curtains on the sunny side of the home during the day
— Run washing machines and dishwashers on the cooler, cheaper part of the day if you're on a time-of-use tariff

None of these are dramatic. That's the point. Heatwaves pass — but the small habits that keep your bills from spiking quietly are worth holding on to.

Save this one for Saturday. Future-you will thank present-you.

You're not on your own.

New figures this week from NHS Highland show nearly 1 in 5 under-fives in the area are growing up in relative poverty. It's a local statistic, but it points to a national reality — families across the UK are stretching every pound further than they did a year ago.

There's no clever trick that fixes that. But there are small, doable things that genuinely take a bit of pressure off:

Plan the week's meals before you shop. A rough list trims waste and saves the impulse top-up trip.
Do a 10-minute bills check. Energy, mobile, broadband — make sure you're on a tariff you actually chose.
Ask your council about the Household Support Fund. It's there for exactly this, doesn't have to be repaid, and is run locally — search your council's name plus "Household Support Fund".
Talk to free debt advice before things feel urgent. Citizens Advice and MoneyHelper are confidential and don't sell anything.

Save this for the next stretchy week. Share with anyone who needs a calmer plan.
