A school run in the morning. A parent's hospital appointment in the afternoon. A teenager's exam stress alongside a father who's started forgetting things. If that sounds familiar, there's a name for it - the sandwich generation.

At least 1.4 million people in the UK are raising their own kids while also supporting an ageing parent or relative right now (according to the ONS). The financial cost is real and measurable: carers who cut back working hours to manage caring responsibilities lose an average of Β£6,268 a year in income, and it doesn't stop there, carers aged 60-65 have 17% less pension wealth than the UK average.

It's not only a financial story either. 31% of the sandwich generation show signs of depression or anxiety, compared to 24% of all adults.

We've broken down what the data shows, and the handful of things that actually help if this is your life right now πŸ‘‰

Ask a new parent what a child costs and they'll think of nappies and cots. Ask a parent of teenagers and they'll talk about phones, school trips, and how much food a 15-year-old actually eats. Both are right, and both are only part of the picture.

The full number: Β£251,018 for a couple raising one child to 18, and Β£287,219 for a lone parent doing it alone (Child Poverty Action Group and Loughborough University, October 2025).

It's not spent evenly. Childcare dominates the early years (a summer holiday club alone averages Β£1,145 per child), school-age costs climb steadily after that, and wages haven't kept pace with any of it.

We've broken down where the money actually goes, and the government support most families are eligible for but don't always claim.

The cost of raising a child in the UK is Β£250,000 for a couple and Β£290,000 for a lone parent. See where the money actually goes, from childcare to university.

Divorce splits more than a home. Income, savings, debts, and pensions all get divided too, and one of these gets missed far more often than people realise.

Only around 1 in 10 UK divorces properly address pensions in the settlement, even though courts have been required to consider them since 1995. The result: at the point of divorce, women had saved an average of Β£23,000 into their own pension, compared to Β£60,000 for men. Left unaddressed, that gap becomes permanent.

We've broken down what actually happens to finances after divorce, and the handful of things that make the biggest difference if you're navigating it (or want to be prepared just in case).

Only 1 in 10 UK divorces address pension assets, and women's income falls 50% on average post-divorce. See what the data says about the real cost of divorce.

We've put together a practical guide to keeping your family finances on track through the summer months, without taking the fun out of it. No radical budgeting, just a few habits that make a real difference.

Know Your Dosh has been nominated for 'Best Mobile App - April 2026' πŸŽ‰

We built Know Your Dosh because most money apps are designed for one person. Real family finances don't work that way.

Families in over 80 countries use Know Your Dosh to get their complete financial picture in one place. This nomination is a reflection of every one of them.

If you use Know Your Dosh, or you believe families deserve better financial tools, we'd love your vote:

The moment a teenager gets their first payslip is one of the best financial teaching opportunities you'll ever have πŸ§‘β€πŸ«

Most parents either stay quiet (not wanting to dampen the moment) or immediately tell them to save most of it (which kills the conversation instantly). But there's a better way and it starts before the money even arrives...

For Global Money Week, we've written a guide to navigating the first conversation well: what to ask, how to decode the payslip together, what to say about scams and credit, and why keeping the door open matters more than getting it right first time.
