Repair cafés are volunteer-run events where people can go to get items repaired. The cafés are usually free to attend, but sometimes they require a booking.

By attending a repair café, you can restore your pre-loved items and save yourself money from buying a replacement.

There are a selection of repair cafés happening across Essex this month.

210 bathtubs of paint donated

You've donated nearly 18,000 litres of paint at recycling centres across Essex. That's enough to fill 210 bathtubs!

With Community RePaint schemes now running in Burnham-on-Crouch, Canvey, Maldon, Saffron Walden, Waltham Abbey, and Witham recycling centres, it's never been easier to reuse paint.

Next time you’re at the recycling centre, don't forget to check out the paint reuse area. You can donate your old paint or grab some for free for your latest DIY project.

Keep up to date as we launch more paint reuse schemes:

Rewear, repair, recycle!

Good quality clothes and textiles don’t need to go in the bin.

If you have items you no longer want, donate them to charity, sell online, or hold a clothes swap.

If something has a hole or frayed seam, try repairing it yourself by watching tutorials, visiting a repair café, or taking it to an alterations shop.

Items that are worn out, damaged, or can’t be repaired, can be taken to the recycling centre.

Say goodbye to clear sacks - a waste recycling message from Braintree District Council:

From 1 June, we will no longer accept recycling in clear sacks.

Please put your dry, clean paper and card directly into your red-lidded bin or paper and card box, and your mixed recycling directly into your blue-lidded bin or mixed recycling box.

We are also no longer delivering clear sacks. If you need any for your final recycling collections in May, you can collect them from your nearest library or our Causeway House office in Bocking End, Braintree.

No food recycling caddy?

Recycling food is a great way to stop your grey bin from getting smelly and full, and it's brilliant for the environment too.

When we collect your food recycling caddy, its contents go to an anaerobic digestion facility in east London, where it becomes biofuel and soil improver, meaning nothing is wasted!

Here's what we accept in your food recycling caddy:

meat and fish, both raw and cooked, including bones
fruit and vegetables, both raw and cooked, including peelings
dairy products such as yoghurt and cheese
eggs and eggshells
bread, cakes and pastries
rice, pasta and beans
uneaten food from plates and dishes
tea bags and coffee grounds
pet food

If you don't have a food recycling caddy, we will bring one to your door. Complete the online form here, email us at [email protected] or call on 01376 552525.

AHP collection application form now live:

Does someone in your household use nappies or continence care products? Sign up for our new AHP collections service.
Applications for the new Absorbent Hygiene Products (AHP) collection service are now open.

If your household uses nappies or continence care products, you may be eligible for a free separate AHP collection.

What can be included?

Nappies, nappy bags and wipes, training pants and pull-ups, disposable bedpans and liners, continence care products, colostomy, stoma and catheter waste, feeding tubes, urine bottles, gloves, aprons and tissues and single use absorbent bed sheets.

If your application is approved, you’ll receive a welcome pack explaining how and when to present your sacks. The service will launch on 1 June alongside the other changes to recycling and general waste collections. The sacks (supplied free of charge) will be collected twice in every three week period.
