Attention all investors ! Interest rates have begun to rise today. How far will they rise ? Over what period ? Of course these are difficult questions to answer but one thing is for sure. More rises are on their way. The important take away here is that investors need to understand how this will impact their investments. The short answer is that bonds (government and company bonds) are likely to experience a period of under performance. In fact it could be considerably worse than this and these bonds may produce capital losses. Why is this impotant ?

The important point here is that investors with low and medium risk portfolios will likely be highly exposed to bonds. Put another way, these investors may not appreciate that their portfolios may not be as safe as they have been led to believe they are or that they are expecting them to be. Consequently it is very important that investors with low and medium risk investments review their investments as soon as possible to ensure they understand the risks they are facing over the next couple of years.
