📚 Why does your small business need a bookkeeper?

Running a business is busy enough without worrying about spreadsheets, receipts and deadlines!

A good bookkeeper helps you:
✅ Keep your finances organised
✅ Stay on top of bills and payments
✅ Understand where your money is going
✅ Prepare for tax deadlines
✅ Spend more time focusing on your business

Less paperwork, more peace of mind. 💙

📚 Are you a limited company owner who thinks your bookkeeper does everything you need?

There’s an important difference between bookkeeping and accounting, and it’s something every limited company director should understand.

A bookkeeper can take care of your day-to-day and monthly bookkeeping, such as:
✅ Recording sales and expenses
✅ Reconciling your bank accounts
✅ Processing invoices and bills
✅ Keeping your accounts up to date
✅ Providing accurate financial information throughout the year

But for a limited company, you will generally still need an accountant to deal with the year-end and statutory responsibilities.

An accountant can help with:
📌 Preparing and filing your company accounts
📌 Corporation Tax returns
📌 Year-end adjustments
📌 Making sure your accounts comply with the relevant requirements
📌 Advising you on tax and your company’s financial position

👉 Think of it this way: your bookkeeper keeps the books in order throughout the year, while your accountant takes those records and deals with the year-end accounts, tax and wider accounting requirements.

A good bookkeeper and accountant can actually work really well together — giving you accurate books throughout the year while making the accountant’s year-end work much smoother (and potentially saving you money!).

If you’re a limited company director and you’re not sure what you need a bookkeeper or accountant for, feel free to get in touch. 😊

🏠 SELF-EMPLOYED & WORK FROM HOME? — DON’T FORGET YOUR HOME OFFICE EXPENSES! 💻

If you’re self-employed and use part of your home for work, you may be able to claim certain costs as business expenses.

Depending on your circumstances, these can include:

💡 Electricity & gas
🌐 Internet & phone costs
🏠 A proportion of your rent or mortgage interest
🛡️ Council tax & home insurance
🖨️ Office equipment, stationery & printer costs
💻 Computers and other equipment
🪑 Office furniture
🔧 Repairs and maintenance relating to your workspace

There are different ways of calculating your working-from-home expenses, and the amount you can claim depends on how you use your home and how much time you spend working there.

⚠️ Important: You can’t simply claim a percentage of every household bill. There are specific HMRC rules around what qualifies and how the calculation should be made.

If you’re self-employed and work from home, it’s worth checking that you’re claiming everything you’re legitimately entitled to.

📩 Need help working out what you can claim? Get in touch!
