“If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.”

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our brand-new project: Flat Holm Island Archive! The archive documents and details the rich history of the island, currently hosting over 150 materials including images and stories, with at least 500 more on the way! Watch this space for never-before-seen interviews with former staff and volunteers, and join us as we travel back through time and grow our expansive library.

The archive is a legacy project for the NLHF funded 'Flat Holm - A Walk Through Time', and wouldn’t be possible without months of hard work and dedication from our Flat Holm archive team and amazing volunteers, who’ve devoted countless hours to archiving and processing the precious content hosted on our People’s Collection Wales site.

Mae'r archif yn dogfennu ac yn manylu ar hanes cyfoethog yr ynys, sydd ar hyn o bryd yn cynnwys dros 150 o ddeunyddiau gan gynnwys delweddau a straeon, gydag o leiaf 500 yn fwy ar y ffordd! Cadwch lygad yma am gyfweliadau na welwyd erioed o'r blaen â chyn-aelodau o staff a gwirfoddolwyr, ac ymunwch â ni wrth i ni deithio'n ôl trwy amser ac ehangu ein llyfrgell helaeth.

It’s !

Did you know? In 2006/2007, on Flat Holm Island, a renewable energy ‘mini-grid’ between the farmhouse, workshops and the foghorn keeper’s cottage was installed. In 2024, a new 14 panel solar array with battery storage was installed, alongside thermal-lined doors in the island farmhouse and a new gravity-powered rainwater harvesting system as part of One Planet Cardiff’s response to climate change.

Rainwater is collected from the roofs of the buildings, and stored in the underground Victorian water tank and pumped through a UV filtration system to provide water for drinking and washing

The Island is currently able to generate 90% of its electricity from green sources, reducing its carbon footprint!

Mae dŵr glaw yn cael ei gasglu o doeau'r adeiladau, a'i storio yn y tanc dŵr Fictoraidd tanddaearol a'i bwmpio trwy system hidlo UV i ddarparu dŵr i'w yfed ac i olchi

Ar hyn o bryd, mae’r Ynys yn gallu cynhyrchu 90% o'i thrydan o ffynonellau gwyrdd, gan leihau ei hôl troed carbon!

Flat Holm is home to the striking oystercatcher, one of the island's most recognisable coastal birds.🪺

With its distinctive black-and-white plumage, bright orange-red bill and piercing red eyes, this fascinating bird is a favourite among visitors and birdwatchers alike. They’re often spotted along the island's rocky shores, where they use their powerful bills to feed on shellfish and other marine creatures.😁

Flat Holm is home to a fascinating variety of marine life! From shore crabs, edible crabs and hermit crabs to beadlet anemones, colourful seaweeds and beautiful starfish, the island's shoreline is packed with incredible species. They also include:

Honeycomb reef worm (Sabellaria alveolata)
Common sunstar (Crossaster papposus)
Dog whelks (Nucella lapillus)

These marine creatures thrive in the rich coastal habitats surrounding Flat Holm, making it an important ecosystem for wildlife and a great place to discover the wonders of our coastal environment.🌊🪸
