We had a fantastic day celebrating the history, wildlife, and stories of Flat Holm, Steep Holm, and Brean Down. It was wonderful to see so many people getting involved and enjoying the day.

Looking for space to slow down, breathe, and get creative? Flat Holm’s stunning landscapes and rich history make it the perfect place to spark the written word.🖋

This two-day course is ideal for both beginners and those with writing experience. You’ll have the opportunity to explore the island, learn new techniques, and develop your own writing practice.🙌

Throughout your stay, you’ll keep a journal of poetry, prose and reflections, inspired by the island. There’ll be time for quiet contemplation, gentle guidance, and coming together to share stories.

From free writing to haiku, you’ll use all your senses to capture the moments that make your Flat Holm experience unique.

Escape to Flat Holm for a long weekend packed with discovery, wildlife, and unforgettable family fun.

Get hands-on with nature through various activities, including rock pooling, minibeast hunting, moth trapping, and maybe even spotting the island’s shy slow worms and lizards. And of course… you’ll get to meet Flat Holm’s loudest locals – the lesser black-backed gulls!

This event from Friday 24-Sunday 26 July is perfect for families with children aged 7-12. If your young explorers fall outside this range and you’d like to discuss suitability, please get in touch.📲

DID YOU KNOW⁉️

Most of our island is left untouched throughout the year, giving wildflowers, insects and ground nesting birds the space they need to flourish. Some areas of grassland are mown once a year in autumn, which helps to maintain biodiversity and prevent the spread of woody scrub.

Supporting the ecosystem plays an important part in Flat Holm continuing to hold its Green Flag Award status.✅

Shwmae from Flat Holm’s Trainee Assistant Wardens!👋

Spring has arrived on the island, and we’ve been busy getting everything ready for the season.

Over winter, we focused on vegetation management, including coppicing the elder trees to make space for the returning gulls. Now, we’re shifting into visitor mode – a recent visit from Cardiff Council’s Parks team gave us great practice in providing guided walks and information. We’ve also been repairing gates and benches, cleaning the beaches, and carrying out the twice yearly deep clean of our water system.🍃🚰

Wildlife monitoring is also well underway: monthly slow worm counts; weekly shelduck, moth and butterfly surveys; and it’s great to see plenty of lesser black backed gulls settling into their nests.🐣
