The Bank of England is set to leave interest rates unchanged at midday on Thursday as it deploys a “wait-and-see” strategy towards the economy before cutting borrowing costs again.

The nine members of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee (MPC), the panel that sets the base rate about every six weeks, are expected to vote 7-2 in favour of leaving rates at 3.75 per cent, already a three-year low.

A resurgence in inflation and stronger than forecast economic growth is likely to convince a wide majority of committee members to leave policy stable. Office for National Statistics figures showed that inflation picked up to 3.4 per cent on an annual basis in December, up from 3.2 per cent in November.

The economy grew by 0.3 per cent in November, according to latest available data, exceeding the central bank’s projections.

We're now also offering a maximum of 4 start dates”
