One thing I absolutely love about running my own business is getting to meet and chat with other business owners.

I love hearing about why they started, how long they’ve been trading, how things are going, what challenges they’ve faced, what support they’ve had along the way, who their customers are, what products they sell… honestly, I could ask questions all day! 🤣

I just find everyone’s individual business journey so interesting. No two stories are ever quite the same.

I recently spent quite a while chatting with the lovely people at Your Home Your World at Moss End Garden Centre.

They have such a great variety of products aimed at helping us reduce our plastic waste, and their bamboo socks make a lovely Christmas gift! They have great gifts for the dogs too.

This week I’ve been moving several months of bookkeeping into a system that better suits the business.

Good bookkeeping migrations involve more than transferring figures. Each month needs checking, supporting evidence needs attaching and the final balances need to agree.

It's now fully reconciled and up to day, and the client is so impressed with the new system.

Why Lavender Ledger, why bookkeeping?

About three years ago, I started that ‘second act’ stage of my life. That point where the children are becoming adults and we start to think about our next challenge, direction in our lives.

Well, that’s when I re-discovered my passion for bookkeeping, after helping out a local school briefly……and I haven’t looked back.

I have LOVED the exams, learning again, having something for myself, that I’m proud of…..but more importantly…..I LOVE supporting people, giving them confidence when they’re starting a business, being there when they have questions, reassuring them.

For years I have supported my children, other families through childminding, and then through fostering. Now I get to support people through bookkeeping and I’m here for it. I love it.

If anyone else is in that ‘second act’, I’m excited to hear what direction life takes you and wish you all the fun in discovering what’s next.

And why Lavender Ledger? My love of all things purple and wellbeing. Have a lovely day everyone.

Your bookkeeping software should support you

Bookkeeping software should make it easier to understand and manage your business-not leave you feeling trapped in a system that doesn’t suit how you work.

Before changing platforms, it’s worth looking at what you genuinely need now and what the business may need as it grows. The right answer isn’t always the most complicated system; it’s the one you can use confidently and consistently.

When does a business expense actually count?

You've bought something for your business, you've received the invoice, but you haven't paid it yet.

Does it count as an expense?

Well, that depends on which accounting method you're using!

If you're using 'cash-basis accounting' you generally record income when you're paid and expenses when you actually pay for them.

So, if you receive an invoice in September but don't pay it until October, the expense would normally count in October.

It's one of those little bookkeeping details that can make a difference to your figures.

Do you manage your own bookkeeping-but occasionally wonder whether you’re doing everything correctly?

Some business owners are perfectly happy sending invoices, uploading receipts and reconciling their bank. What they really need is somewhere to ask questions and a professional second pair of eyes occasionally.

💜 Areas where the process is creating extra work
💜 Questions to discuss before they become bigger worries

If the records are repeatedly falling behind or becoming too complicated, ongoing bookkeeping may be more suitable. But you do not have to commit to complete monthly support simply because you would like some reassurance.
