Is your mobility scooter seat heating up in the heatwave? ☀️

When the sun's out, scooter seats can get surprisingly warm, especially darker vinyl ones left in direct sunlight.

Here are a few simple ways to keep things comfortable when the temperature climbs:

✅ Park in the shade wherever you can. Even a few minutes under cover keeps the seat cooler
✅ Pop a light-coloured towel or seat cover over the seat when you're parked up
✅ Keep a foldable cover in your basket or bag so it's always to hand
✅ Give the seat a quick touch-test before you sit down. Metal armrests and handlebars can warm up too
✅ Choose a light-coloured or breathable seat cover if you can, as it reflects more heat than dark vinyl

This week BBC News shared the story of Stephen Magee from Coleraine, who's been told his new mobility scooter is 10cm too big to travel on Translink trains and buses.

Now he's left unable to make journeys that gave him independence and connected him to the things he enjoys.

Operators have to weigh up genuine safety considerations, and Translink says its assessment process exists for that reason.

But Stephen's situation raises a fair question: with bus and rail operators each setting their own size, weight and turning-circle limits, and these varying considerably from one network to the next, is this patchwork of guidelines actually working for mobility scooter users?

For a group who can rely on their scooter as a lifeline to independence, is it reasonable to expect them to navigate a different set of rules with every operator they travel with — or is more consistency needed?
