A word of caution to my British followers: if you receive in the post a flyer advertising a 'We Buy Your Gold' event in, say, a local village hall - Avoid! I went today out of curiosity to see what I would be offered for a Half-Sovereign (current full gold value £357). I was offered £300 (84% of the gold price). That is really appalling. I offer 92% which I consider fair, some others offer more. The exception is if the people at the event are part of a recognised trade organisation (such as the British Numismatic Trade Association). Usually they do not belong to any such association.

Richard Falkiner 1936-2026. I have just heard that Richard Falkiner died yesterday. Perhaps not widely known these days among the younger generation of numismatists, he is certainly well-known among British numismatists of my generation and above. He began his career in 1956 at Glendining & Co, central London auctioneers, before moving to Christie's in 1958 to set up their own coin department. From 1972 he was an independent dealer and numismatic writer, becoming a weekly columnist for the Antiques Trade Gazette (until 2014). In 1992 he wrote a history of Glendining's (unfortunately never published although I have one of three extant bound photocopies). An ardent "European" in the political sense, in 1991 he struck a series of unofficial ECU (European Currency Unit) coins in his name. The ECU was a trial forerunner of the Euro. The photograph of Richard was taken after a jolly lunch in 2008 hosted by Peter Mitchell, formerly of Baldwin's. He often attended the London Coin Fair, including just last month, making the lengthy journey from his home near Evesham - a determined effort indeed.

It gives me a warm glow when I add to my collection a previously unrecorded medal, in this case a variety of the otherwise common 1885 Thomas Charles Sunday School in Wales Centenary. It's struck in bronze-gilt (or gilt bronze if you prefer). I haven't seen another or read of one in 35 years of collecting. This might be a suitable moment to remind people that I'm assembling a catalogue of Welsh-language commemorative medals - so do contact me if you have anything which may qualify. Many thanks!

Shocking and sad news has just been announced that Phil Skingley has died suddenly. He was for many years the head of Spink Books, and more recently a director of Coincraft in London. He was somewhat younger than me and his premature death is truly a shock. My sincere condolences to his wife Vicky and family. He leaves two young children behind also. This photo was taken in 2005 when I was leaving ungainful employment for the life of a self-employed coin dealer. The ready smile was typical of Phil.

This medal arrived in the post today. It is to mark the centenary of the birth of numismatist Michael Dolley, often regarded as a 'doyen' of Irish numismatics. He died a few years before I came on the numismatic scene but he was well-known by reputation. The medallist is Danuta Solowiej and it was struck in a limited edition (by subscription) by Fattorini of Birmingham. I think both Danuta and Fattorini have done a splendid job.
