In my job, I have to plan for the worst but hope for the best. This post is all about leaving a legacy. Who matters most in your world, and what would you want them to know.

Over the past week I’ve been sharing a few thoughts about time.

In the first post I talked about protecting your health.

In the second I spoke about planning for retirement so you have more time to enjoy life.

But there is another important part of financial planning that also relates to time.

Making sure the people we care about are protected if we’re no longer here.

This is where things like life insurance, wills and protection planning come into the conversation.

These aren’t always the easiest topics to think about.
But they are some of the most important.
Because the reality is that financial planning isn’t just about building wealth.

It’s about protecting families, supporting loved ones and making sure that if the unexpected happens, the people we care about most are looked after.

Time is our most valuable asset. We can’t control how much of it we have.

But with the right planning in place, we can make sure the time we do have is spent living well, and that the people we love are protected for the future.

And ultimately, that’s what good financial planning is really about.

The truth about finances?

The sooner you start planning, the more options you usually give yourself later.

Waiting doesn’t make financial decisions disappear it often just makes them more stressful, more expensive or more overwhelming down the line. Burying your head in the sand is the worst thing you can do and often it is no where near as bad as you think!

Whether it’s:
✔ Retirement planning
✔ Investments
✔ Savings
✔ Tax planning
✔ Business finances
✔ Estate planning

…starting earlier gives you more time, more flexibility and more opportunity to make informed decisions.

You don’t need to have everything figured out overnight and that is where you can get a professional to help you! I certainly couldn’t come into your day job and do what you do, and it is the same with financial planning for you.

A pension is a long-term investment the fund value may fluctuate and can go down. Your eventual income may depend upon the size of the fund at retirement, future interest rates and tax legislation. The value of investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested. Retirement – I want you to think right now about what that looks like for you.

In my previous post I talked about how looking after your health can help protect the time we have. Today I want to talk about another side of time - retirement.

For many people, life starts out as living to work. Building a career, raising a family, paying the mortgage.

But at some point the goal shifts. It becomes about working to live.

One of the most common questions I’m asked is: “How much do I need to retire?”
But the real question is often much bigger than that.

How do you want to spend your time once work is no longer part of the routine?
For some people it’s travelling.
For others it’s spending more time with family.
Or finally doing the things they never had time for before.

This is why starting retirement planning early matters.

Because the earlier you plan, the more choice and flexibility you can create later.
Financial planning isn’t just about building wealth.

It’s about giving yourself time to enjoy the life you’ve worked so hard to build.
In my final post in this series, I’ll talk about another important aspect of time…

Making sure the people you care about most are protected.

Time - It’s the one thing none of us are given more of.

Yet interestingly, as technology and medicine advance, we are living longer than ever before. Life expectancy continues to increase and many of us will live well into our 80s and 90s.

But living longer only really matters if we are able to live well.

That’s why one of the areas I focus on with clients is protection, particularly when it comes to health.

For example, Private Medical Insurance can help people access diagnosis and treatment quickly, often avoiding long waiting times and giving peace of mind if something doesn’t feel quite right.

Sometimes that early access to care can mean catching something before it becomes more serious.

In a way, looking after your health is one of the few ways we can buy back time.
And when it comes to financial planning, time is one of the most valuable assets we have.

This is the first post in a short series I’m sharing this week about Time and Financial Planning.

Next, I’ll talk about how planning early can give you something many people underestimate…

More time to live the life you want in retirement.

Real talk…

Do you actually have a retirement plan?

Not just a pension sitting somewhere…but a clear plan for what your life looks like later on?

Because a pension on its own isn’t the plan.

It’s just the vehicle.

The real questions are:

• When do you want to retire?
• What kind of lifestyle do you want?
• Will your current contributions actually get you there?

So many people are paying into pensions without ever checking if it’s enough… or even aligned with what they want. Most people I speak to have no clue where their past pensions are!

This isn’t about fear it’s about clarity.

Because the earlier you get clear, the more options you have.

If you’ve been putting this off or not sure where to start, let’s have an honest conversation.

Selling on Vinted or eBay? You might need to declare it to HMRC.

As a financial adviser, one of the many things I often help clients with is understanding the financial and tax implications of things they may not have even considered.

Many people don’t realise that if you regularly sell items online, especially for profit it could count as taxable income.

This doesn’t usually apply to:

✔ Selling your old clothes occasionally
✔ Having a general clear out
✔ Selling personal items for less than you paid

But it can apply if you are:

• Buying items to resell
• Making regular profits
• Treating it like a side hustle or small business

Platforms like Vinted, eBay and Depop can now share seller information with HMRC, so it’s important to understand the rules and stay on top of your finances.

The good news? Being proactive now can help avoid stress later.

Let’s talk… are you feeling it at the moment? 💭

Rising costs, bills creeping up, everything just that little bit more expensive…
We’re all hearing it and most of us are feeling it too.

And naturally, one of the first things people worry about?
Savings.
Are you managing to keep putting money aside…
or does it feel like there’s less and less left at the end of the month?

No judgement here, just a real conversation.
How are you finding things right now? 💬

These gold coins take me back to being a kid. 💰

But here’s the thing, does your money seem to disappear as quickly as eating one of these coins? Having money in your hands isn’t the same as having a plan for it. It’s easy for it to come in… and just as easy for it to go out again and psychology also has a part to play in this.

All those little bits of spending here, and little bits there soon add up… until you’re left wondering where it all went.

Real financial confidence is about clarity and having a financial plan.

✔ Giving every £ a purpose
✔ Building savings and investments
✔ Creating security for your future
✔ Still enjoying life along the way

Because wealth isn’t about holding money… it’s about making it work for you.

If you’re ready to stop guessing and start building, I’m here to help
