As part of the LIFE Mobile Marine Species project, teams from Initiative PIM, together with those from the Corsican Environmental Office and with support from Phares et Balises, installed 30 artificial nesting boxes on Giraglia Island in Cap Corse. This island is a favorable breeding ground for shearwaters and is part of the Cap Corse Islands Nature Reserve; landing there is prohibited unless authorized by prefectural decree.
The installation of nesting boxes is part of an ongoing series of ecological restoration efforts aimed at preserving shearwater populations and ensuring their reproduction. Yelkouan shearwaters (𝑃𝑢𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑠 𝑦𝑒𝑙𝑘𝑜𝑢𝑎𝑛) and Scopoli’s shearwaters (𝐶𝑎𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑠 𝑑𝑖𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑎), are birds that spend their lives at sea and return to land to nest. They are protected and endangered species (Vulnerable – IUCN): the Yelkouan shearwater is endangered at the national level, and Scopoli’s shearwater at the regional level.
Some of the existing burrows where the shearwaters nest have collapsed due to erosion, thereby threatening their chances of breeding. Our teams have therefore sought to replace these old burrows with artificial nesting boxes to encourage re-nesting by replicating conditions favorable to reproduction: the boxes provide darkness and space, are durable, and blend into the landscape. Population monitoring is conducted annually by the Corsican Environmental Agency to verify the presence and settlement of the shearwaters.
