🇬🇲 THE GAMBIA BUSINESS & ECONOMY WATCH — BORROWING REMAINS EXPENSIVE, SO CASH FLOW MATTERS
The Central Bank of The Gambia enters September with its Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 14%, while July inflation stood at around 7%.
The latest displayed valuation rate from 31 August puts the U.S. dollar at approximately D72.93, while the 91-day Treasury-bill yield is around 4.67%.
💰 WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR BUSINESSES?
With borrowing still relatively expensive, entrepreneurs need to think carefully before building businesses that depend heavily on loans.
I continue to favour businesses that can:
✅ Start with manageable capital
✅ Generate cash relatively quickly
✅ Sell equipment customers genuinely need
✅ Create recurring income through services
✅ Provide maintenance and replacement parts
☀️🌾 AGRICULTURE + ENERGY = AN AREA TO WATCH
Recent investment-development activity continues to point toward opportunities in agriculture, agro-processing and decentralised energy.
One business model I find particularly interesting is:
☀️ Solar irrigation systems
💧 Water pumps & storage tanks
🔋 Batteries & inverters
❄️ Cold-storage systems
🧊 Commercial refrigeration
🔧 Spare parts
🛠️ Installation & maintenance
The opportunity isn’t necessarily to own the farm yourself.
You can build a business supplying the farmers.
For example:
IMPORT EQUIPMENT → SELL → INSTALL → MAINTAIN → SUPPLY PARTS → UPGRADE SYSTEMS
One customer can therefore generate several sources of revenue instead of only one sale.
💡 MY BUSINESS TAKEAWAY
When borrowing costs are high, don’t only ask:
“How much profit can this product make?”
Also ask:
“How quickly can I recover my capital, and can this customer generate recurring revenue?”
🇬🇲 The strongest opportunities may not always be the biggest projects. Sometimes they are the businesses supplying, installing and maintaining what those projects need.
