Lampedusa Walk

Lampedusa Walk The Lampedusa Walk is a sponsored walk along the route of the Berlin Wall to raise money for the UN refugee agency. See the About page for how to donate.

October 3, 2014 is the first anniversary of the Lampedusa tragedy, where over 360 people died when their boat sank off the Italian island of Lampedusa. To mark the anniversary and to raise awareness of the plight of migrants trying to reach Europe, we plan to walk along part of the route of the former Berlin Wall. October 3 is also German Unity Day, a national holiday to mark German reunification.

The Berlin Wall is of course a symbol of a barrier that claimed many lives. All donations will go to UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency which helps refugees around the world. If you have a German bank account, you can make a (tax deductible) donation here: https://www.uno-fluechtlingshilfe.de/aktiv-werden/eigene-spendenaktion.html?hptitle=lampedusa-walk (UNO-Fluechtlingshilfe is the UNHCR's national organisation in Germany.) If you live outside Germany, you can donate to the UNHCR via the Lampedusa Walk Just Giving page: http://www.justgiving.com/LampedusaWalk

You can also donate directly to the UNHCR online via their home page (http://donate.unhcr.org/international/general) or their respective country sites (http://bit.ly/1gOgrWf). Please let us know by email ([email protected]) or Facebook if you donate this way so we can keep track of the total! You can also send us a donation in cash, PayPal or by bank transfer and we will transfer it to the German UNHCR association. Please contact us by email ([email protected]) if you want to do this. Thank you for your support! David Smith, Johanna Da Rocha Abreu and Joseph Given

Interesting analysis by Ian Lesser and Astrid Ziebarth of the German Marshall Fund: "Without a proper strategy to support growth, jobs, and security in the countries of origin, and increased opportunities for legal work in the EU, people will still risk their lives to cross the Mediterranean."

BRUSSELS—The terrible loss of life in the latest Mediterranean migration disasters may finally spur European Union leaders to concerted action. If so, it will be a very tardy response to the worst human security crisis affecting Europe since World War II. EU ministers should naturally focus on steps…

The UNHCR has disturbing new figures on the number of people dying in the Mediterranean: "In all, 90,000 people crossed to Europe between July 1 and September 30 and at least 2,200 lost their lives."

Those making the crossing in the first half of the year faced a 1.06 per cent chance of losing their life, compared to 2.4 per cent for those crossing in the third quarter.
