While reading 101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think by Brianna Wiest, I came across an idea that made me reflect on how we sometimes protect ourselves emotionally.
Sometimes, caring about something means accepting that we could lose it.
Caring about a dream means risking disappointment.
Caring about someone means allowing ourselves to be vulnerable.
Trying something new means accepting that it might not work out.
And sometimes, instead of accepting that uncertainty, we convince ourselves that we don't care that much anyway.
We lower our expectations.
We distance ourselves.
We stop getting excited about possibilities.
Maybe it feels safer that way.
The book explores how treating apathy as protection can also prevent us from fully experiencing the good things life has to offer.
This made me think about an important question:
Am I genuinely okay with not caring, or am I simply trying to avoid being disappointed?
I'm learning that protecting myself from every possible disappointment could also mean missing out on meaningful experiences.
Of course, having boundaries is important. We don't have to give everything or everyone unlimited access to us.
But perhaps there's a difference between protecting our peace and closing ourselves off completely.
Sometimes, being willing to care is part of being willing to live fully.
Have you ever acted like something didn't matter to you because you were afraid of being disappointed?
