Somicon AG We solve separation problems & sell high quality process membranes and solutions around membrane sep

Membrane Technology as a core technology was established at Ciba-Geigy in the early seventies. The founder of Somicon, Sohail Mirza joined this group in 1986 and has been involved in numerous projects covering practically all aspects of the Membrane Technology. In 1996 Mirza & his team decided to make this group independent in the form of a new company Somicon AG. In their efforts, the team was su

pported by the Novartis Venture Capital Fund. Somicon could take over the complete know-how of more than 25 years from Ciba-Geigy. Somicon is a completely independent company with no legal connection to Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Novartis, Syngenta, BASF, Clariant or Huntsman. We are a group that works closely with first class companies and have the advantage of pooling excellent resources from Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Food Technologies and Pharmaceutical Technology. Thus we are in a position to look at industrial issues in a holistic manner. Contacts through various segments of processing industry enable us to come up with innovative and unique solutions.

I will be lecturing at Crocus Expo International Exhibition Centre, Moscow, Russia on Membrane Technology on 3. March, 2017. It is nice to sometimes try to condense your 30 years of experience in an hour. A test on what mastery you have on the subject.

Why use Tubes when Spiral Wound are so cost effective?

In 1989 we did a thorough study to compare the effective cost of using tubular systems versus spiral wound system. We chose an application that was run on both systems on an industrial scale. Naturally, the comparison was done with goals in mind that would reduce the overall processing cost (meaning cost of processes up stream and down stream of membrane filtration system).

Astonishing results were found. There is a class of applications in the CPI where tubular systems provide lower costs and deliver products close to the final requirements.

Those interested in this study may contact us for details.

A new process has been studied to separate organic species (MW around 300 g/mol) from a water-solvent mixture. Somicon is glad to report that the pilot scale trials are underway with very promising results. Several thousand kg of mixture per day will be treated with the organic impurity rejection of 99% and above. Solvent in the system is aggressive to most polymers but the stability of our membranes has been studied for more than 2 thousand hours without any damage to the membranes and modules. By using this system, the client would realise savings in upper 6 digits (US$) per annum.

Interesting possibilities with Solvent Resistant Membranes

These days we are doing very intensive work with some highly selective solvent resistant NF Membranes. There are lots of possibilities to use these type of membranes in the chemicals processing. Our focus right now is to increase the process yields and find meaningful concepts to re-use solvents.

Interested parties can contact us directly.

Can forward osmosis be used as a viable unit operation to concentrate delicate solutions such as food extracts? I think yes. My preliminary calculations are very promising. However, technical refinements are necessary to make it a highly economic process. These also seem to be possible. We are also studying the so called "Pressure Re****ed Osmosis" for energy recovery.
