Filing your taxes and planning around them are not the same conversation. One is looking back. The other is looking forward — and the decisions you make years before you retire are often worth far more than anything you can do at filing time.

If you’ve never had the forward-looking version of this conversation, it’s probably time.

The renewal number doesn’t come out of nowhere. It’s been building quietly for nine months while nobody was watching. By the time it lands on your desk, the story is already written.

The scramble at month eleven is avoidable. It just requires someone paying attention before it becomes urgent.

You’ll never get the email that says “we went with someone else because your benefits package wasn’t competitive.” It just goes quiet. And you move on assuming it was something else.

Your benefits plan is part of every offer you make. It’s worth making sure it’s doing its job.

None of these signs mean your advisor is a bad person. Most generalists genuinely care and mean well. But caring and knowing aren’t the same thing — and in employee benefits, the gaps in expertise have a way of showing up at the exact moment you can least afford them.

Three or more of these sound familiar? Worth having a different conversation.

“I’ll sell the business when I retire” is a plan in the same way that “it’ll work out” is a plan.

Maybe it will. But without a real number, a real exit timeline, and a real backup if the sale doesn’t go the way you hoped — you’re betting your entire retirement on a single outcome you don’t fully control. That’s worth stress-testing before it’s too late to adjust.

Most business owners spend decades building something valuable and very little time thinking about what happens when it’s time to hand it off. The financial questions are important. The personal ones — what do I do Monday morning, what happens to my people — those are the ones that catch people off guard.

You only get to do this once. The plan is worth building early.

This one doesn’t get asked enough.

Business owners are often the most thoughtful people in the room when it comes to taking care of their employees. They think through the plan, the coverage, the cost, whether their people are protected.

Then they go home and realize nobody’s ever asked them the same question.

Owning a business doesn’t automatically mean you’re covered. Often it means the opposite. You’ve been meaning to sort out your own coverage for years and it keeps getting pushed down the list behind everything else the business needs.

You’ve spent years making sure your team is looked after. It’s worth five minutes to make sure you are too.
