PSA Algae: Phycological Society of America

For members and friends of the Phycological Society of America (PSA). Phycology is the study of ALGAE (from the Greek Phycos, for seaweed).

The society was founded in 1946 to promote research and teaching in all fields of Phycology and publishes the Journal of Phycology and the Phycological Newsletter.

Annual meetings are held, often jointly with other national or international societies of mutual member interest.

The Phycological Society of America annually awards an amount up to $10,000 USD to one early career researcher, who will be a Norma J. Lang Fellow for three years.

Individuals must be employed by a university or other non-commercial entity and be doing research on algae.

Applications for Hoshaw Travel Awards to help students attend the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Phycological Society of America in Juneau, Alaska are now being accepted!

The deadline to apply is March 15th (11:59 PM PST). Eligibility details, application instructions, and the funding priority scheme can be found on the PSA website (link in bio).

Grants-in-Aid of Research awards are due Nov 1, 2025.
Applicants must be a graduate student or postdoctoral researcher with an active research program in any area of phycology. The applicant must be a current member of PSA.

Taylor Virgin is our meeting logo designer. She is a MASc in Civil Engineering at the University of Waterloo studying cyanobacteria in a wildfire-impacted drinking water reservoir.

This year’s theme for PSA Annual meeting 2025 is sustainability. Read all about her inspiration for this beautiful logo.

Sargassum blooms pose both challenges and opportunities for sustainability along
Atlantic coasts, including in Puerto Rico.
This design symbolizes sustainability using a globe surrounded by a heart made from
Sargassum, representing the reciprocal relationship we need to have with our planet.

The microalgae that surround the globe include organisms studied by the keynote
speakers (including Alexandrium minutum and Chlamydomonas
reinhardtii) and other taxa that represent the diversity of algae
studied by PSA members. The logo also highlights Puerto
Rico—the location for PSA 2025—using the map marker and an
algal genus that, while currently harming local ecosystems, may
have potential as a sustainable resource.
