I made money on Dell — and it was still a mistake. Bought ~$100, sold ~$115, now $437. Why taking the quick win cost me a 4x, and how retail actually beats Wall Street. Day 283.

DAY 282

One of the coolest things that’s happened over the last month is how many artists and creatives from the music industry have started following me here.

A lot of them message me saying:
“I never realized how important business was inside music.”

And honestly, that’s the point.

Most people enter music because they love the art.
But the people who last learn the game behind the art:

* ownership
* distribution
* audience
* leverage
* branding
* negotiation
* narrative

You do NOT need an MBA.

But you do need to understand:

* the music industry is basically Game of Thrones with contracts, platforms, and algorithms
* and every artist today needs to think like a direct-to-consumer global brand

The future belongs to artists who combine creativity with strategic intelligence.

That’s why I keep talking about this every day.

Cyrille Bolloré killed Ackman’s $65B UMG bid today. €27 = the floor. €25 prior bloc deal already rejected. €30.40 public bid rejected today. And the new face of Bolloré is 41 — a peer generation of the artists fighting UMG. Day 281 special edition. The full breakdown 👇

DJ Akademiks shoutout last night — and he said the quiet part loud: spend half, ideally a quarter, save and invest the rest. Every artist. Every regular person. If MJ had, ATV doesn’t go to Sony for $750M in 2016. It auctions for north of $1.5B with real bidders at the table. Drake studies these cases for a reason. Day 281 — Too Many Bs Still Left On The Table.

The category has a name. Industry press calls it “the new payola.”

Drake released 3 albums on May 15th. The press counted streams. Nobody quoted the line on track 7 of Iceman where he said, “Hundred million streams vanished.”

6 months earlier, an unrelated rapper filed a federal class action quantifying the exact same number — “more than a hundred million streams” originating “in areas with zero residential addresses.”

The line on the album and the line on the docket are the same line.

There’s a 20-year pattern under this. Google paid $90M in 2006 — no admission. iHeartMedia settled with Drake in 2025 — no admission. Same template, different industries.

UMG CEO Sir Lucian Grainge already used the phrase “stream manipulation” on a 2024 earnings call. The question is who keeps pretending.

On May 4, I predicted ICEMAN would do 525,000 equivalent album units in its first week. Yesterday, Billboard released the actual: 463,000. I was 62,000 high.

When I made the call, I was forecasting a normal release. One album. Single-record peak.

Drake then did something I didn’t anticipate. He triple-dropped — ICEMAN, HABIBTI, MAID OF HONOUR — and took the top three spots on Billboard 200 in one tracking week. Number 1. Number 2. Number 3. Per Billboard, the first time any act has held the top three positions simultaneously since the chart went weekly in March 1956.

The triple-drop capped his own single-album peak. He traded the bigger ICEMAN number for historic catalog dominance.

Three days ago, in “Forty-Three Tracks, One Crip Walk,” I documented Drake’s fire discipline — restraint at the lyric level. Eight syllables on a Kendrick-targeted verse registered the Super Bowl LIX moment without naming Serena Williams. Plausible deniability preserved. Patience over maximum-yield.

The triple-drop is the same discipline at the release-strategy level. He capped his own per-album peak on purpose.

I documented the discipline three days ago. I should have been pricing it three weeks ago.

Chartmetric confirms the cultural moment was real. Since May 15, Drake gained 8.4 million new Spotify monthly listeners (89.7M → 97.1M) and 945,000 new followers. That’s the curve of an artist annexing the catalog chart. Not the curve of an artist maxing a single record.

The lesson for the model: when the artist’s documented pattern is restraint-as-moat, model the restraint as baseline. The single-record peak gets capped on purpose.

Drake’s was a strategy. Mine was the miss. The model gets updated.

On Friday, the man Sir Lucian Grainge answers to got bad news from a Paris courtroom.

His name is Vincent Bolloré. Most Drake fans have never heard of him. He prefers it that way. African ports built his fortune. Universal Music was the trophy.

The Advocate General turned against him. Ruling July 8.

If it goes against him: billions in mandatory buyout. UMG money locks up. Drake’s pen suddenly worth more.

Same fight 25 years ago: Edgar Bronfman Jr. blew his family’s Canadian liquor dynasty betting on Universal. Bolloré inherited what survived.

Drake has two doors. Re-sign UMG. Or walk — not to Warner. To Larry Jackson’s gamma. Link in bio.

On Sunday I told you about Vincent Bolloré — the French billionaire who controls Universal Music. Today the connection. Bolloré wants Universal cheap. He’s buying his own pyramid level by level, and lower Universal = cheaper buyouts. That makes him long the chaos. Every quarter Drake’s contract stays open is another quarter Universal trades at a discount. If Lucian settled tomorrow, Universal re-rates, Bolloré’s buyout math gets expensive. The Drake fight isn’t Drake vs Lucian. It’s Drake vs Bolloré — with Lucian executing. The Paris court rules tomorrow on Bolloré’s control over Vivendi. Day 275.
