Good news!
The Bank of Canada has lowered its target interest rate to 4.75%, reflecting signs that inflation is easing.
In the first quarter of 2024, Canada's economy grew by 1.7%, though slower than expected. While consumer spending and housing activity were strong, business investments grew, but employment growth lagged behind the population increase. Inflation in April dropped to 2.7%, with core inflation measures also showing a downward trend. The Bank believes these trends support the rate cut and is committed to monitoring inflation closely to ensure price stability for Canadians.
The Bank of Canada today reduced its target for the overnight rate to 4ยพ%, with the Bank Rate at 5% and the deposit rate at 4ยพ%. The Bank is continuing its policy of balance sheet normalization.
