Shares in a relatively small Canadian materials company have surging after some misguided investors apparently thought they were getting s deal on buying stock in the world’s largest social media company. Shares in Nova Scotia based Meta Materials gained 26% in after-hours trading on Nasdaq Thursday after Facebook Inc. announced it would be changing its name to Meta.

Several Canadian companies are giving the four-day work week a try, with the intention to increase employee satisfaction and reduce burnout without sacrificing productivity. The Ontario Liberal party also said that this week they would pilot a four-day working week if elected in 2022.

University of Waterloo students Brian Mao and Ben Zhang were part of the team to complete in the Indy Autonomous Challenge on Saturday for a top prize of $1 million US. There were 8 other teams from around the globe taking part in the race, each tasked with modifying a Dallara AV-21 race car. The price tag on Zhang’s and Mao’s team race car was about $1 million US and it had the bility to reach top speeds of 200 km/h.

PayPal has made an offer to buy the digital pinboard site Pinterest for $45 billion. The per share price would represent a 26 per cent premium to Pinterest’s closing price of %55.58 on Tuesday. PalPal plans to finance the acquisition mostly through stock.

In a message to students sent from UTM Vice President & Principal Alexandra Gillespie announced that UTM is planning for the majority of winter semester courses to be held in person. Gillespie also indicated while some courses are currently scheduled to be online in the winter term, the school may soon change the mode of course delivery to in-person.

Statistics Canada reported 157,000 new jobs were added in September in Canada, enough to put employment numbers back above pre-pandemic level. Before the pandemic, Canada’s jobless rate was 5.6%. It jumped sharply in March, April and May of 2020, peaking at 13.7% in May lasy year, and has trended downward ever since.

RBC Global Asset Management Inc. announced its September mutual fund net sales of $1.45 billion. Long-term funds net sales of $1.5 billion and money market funds had net redemption of $51 million. Mutual fund assets under management decreased by 1.8%. This trend is visible with RBC Select Portfolios, a suite of actively managed and globally diversified fund-of-fund solutions, which were the top selling solutions in September.

Accounting and consulting firm PwC told it will allow its over 40,000 US client services employees to work from home and live anywhere they want in perpetuity. Support staff and employees in areas such as human resources and legal operations that do not face clients already had the option to work virtually full time, making the one of the biggest employers to embrace permanent remote work.
