Losing a loved one is devastating, and the main purpose of life insurance is to help offset some of the financial hardship that comes with it.

Stay-at-home parents should definitely not count themselves out when it comes to life insurance—even if they technically don’t take home a salary. Childcare, cooking, cleaning, and managing a household are equivalent to around $100,000 in annual income.

But life insurance doesn’t just have to be income replacement. Now, think about other financial obligations that lie ahead, or that you might leave behind. For example, if you have kids, you might want to cover their college tuition with your life insurance payout. That can easily add a couple hundred thousand dollars to the value of your policy.

You might also want to cover your outstanding debts, like mortgage payments, private student loans, and credit card debt. By factoring in your remaining debt into your life insurance policy, your family can comfortably pay it off if you were no longer around.

$1 million doesn’t seem like such a huge sum anymore, now does it?

In 2020:
- The Canadian Cancer Society reported that 617 Canadians were diagnosed with cancer every day, and
- The Heart and Stroke Foundation said 35,000 cardiac arrests and 62,00 strokes happen each year.
- Lung, breast, colorectal and prostate cancer are the most commonly diagnosed types of cancer in Canada (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer)

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐥𝐥?

Having a serious illness can become pricey. You’ll likely face expenses not covered by your provincial health insurance or employer health benefits. Many patients incur substantial out-of-pocket expenses for their:
- Care
- Travel and accommodations
- Drugs
- Increased childcare costs
- Lost work wages (especially for those who don’t have disability payments)

So, if you become seriously ill, having critical illness insurance can help pay these and other expenses. It can ultimately help you prevent financial stress. Because being sick is stressful enough

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭?

The price you pay for your insurance premiums will depend on:
- The type of plan you choose,
- The payment period you choose, and
- Factors like your assigned s*x, age, smoking status, and medical history.

For example: A Term 10 policy for a non-smoking, 35-year-old woman could cost about $32.40 per month. For a man of the same age, it’s closer to $32.13 per month. Then, the person who becomes seriously ill with one of the covered illnesses will receive $100,000.

Albert - 45 years old, mechanical engineer. Albert is saving for his retirement. His income is high now, but he expects to earn less once he retires. His goal is to retire by the age of 65 and spend more time with his family

Why an RRSP?

An RRSP may be the most appropriate option for Albert because he is in a higher tax bracket. By contributing to a RRSP, Albert would pay less tax as it would help lower his taxable income now when his tax rate is higher. Albert would defer paying tax on his RRSP contributions until retirement when his income and tax liabilities may be lower

𝗦𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗼 𝟮: 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗧𝗙𝗦𝗔

Golnoosh - 45 years old, mechanical engineer. Golnoosh is saving to retire at the age of 65 and spend time with her family. She started her own company and makes a modest income but expects it to grow significantly

Why a TFSA?

A TFSA may be the better option for Golnoosh because she expects to be making significantly more in the future than she does now. The TFSA may also provide the flexibility she needs because funds can be withdrawn tax-free at any time1 and any amount withdrawn is added back to her contribution room the next year

Contributions to a TFSA are not tax - deductible and withdrawals from the account are not taxed

With an RRSP, tax is deferred until the funds are withdrawn. So, in Golnoosh's case, if she saves in an RRSP, she could end up paying more tax when she withdraws money in retirement than she normally would

𝗧𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 is like renting an apartment. Most people have rented at some point in their lives. You pay your rent but will never own the apartment. Depending on your situation, this can be the best or only option at the time. If you decide in the future to purchase something permanent and move into your own home, you don’t take any equity with you.

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 is like owning a home. It’s not just about meeting an immediate need but also about investing for your future. It may be more expensive than renting but you build equity with every payment you make. Plus, if you put money into the house through upgrades and renovations, you can further increase the value.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

If you have a spouse and kids, ask yourself: What do you want to happen to them when you’re gone? Chances are, you’d like for them to maintain their current lifestyle, as opposed to dealing with financial uncertainty or having to move out of their home

If you have dependents, you probably need a life insurance policy. It can help settle debt obligations (such as your mortgage, auto loans and credit card bills), allow your dependents to stay in the family home, and cover everyday living expenses. Beyond that, it can pay for future life expenses (the cost of your children’s post-secondary education, for instance).

If you’re single and no one is actively depending on your income, a life insurance policy is still worth considering. The death benefit may be enough to take care of any debts, cover those inevitable end-of-life expenses (such as your funeral arrangements) and provide financial support for your loved ones or favourite charities.

Life Insurance is not for you, it is for those who have to carry on without you.

If you’re like most people, your "stuff” is covered. But are you?

Government health plans may not cover all the costs associated with living with a critical illness. At the most critical time in their lives, many Canadians are forced to deplete their life savings in order to get the life-saving treatment they need or to pay for modifications to their home or vehicles so they can remain independent for as long as possible.
