Insurance is getting more expensive. That is not up for debate. Rebuild costs have risen 25% in the last 5 years. If you have not increased the value of your home or commercial building on your insurance policy in 5 years or if it has only increased by 4% per year, you may be underinsured.
Co-insurance is a complicated problem. If you have a loss and your building is underinsured, you are self insuring a portion of the building. That means that you are responsible for the difference in values. This can be a very damaging financial situation. Especially if you have a fiduciary duty to shareholders, other owners, people named in a will that have their portion of the estate eroded and many other potentially devastating situations.
Personally, you would be caught with a home that is not fully repaired and uninhabitable.

Please discuss this with your insurance broker. Or give me a call, I am happy to help in any way I can.

Residential rebuild costs across Canada have increased almost 25% over five years, creating serious insurance-to-value implications.

Hopefully the melting season is upon us very soon. Here are some great water prevention tips to help avoid a loss. This time of year its always good to move snow away from your house to avoid seepage. Seepage isn't covered so preventing it is the key.

If you have a lot of icicles and large chunks of ice on your roof, you may need to consider getting someone in to check your attic. If too much heat escapes through your roof, it creats ice damming and large icicles. If the roof is properly ventilated and insulated, this shouldn't happen.

Insurance carriers are starting to do more Loss Prevention Inspections as a prevention model. Prevention is the key to lower losses. These inspections can include heat sensors on panel boxes, safety hazards and failing hot water tanks.
The goal is to prevent a claim from happening. If you have a breaker that is overheating in your panel box, you might never know until you have a fire. It might also include missing railings, corroded water pipes or missing shingles.
They will also include things piled against a house like garbage, falling down buildings or messy yards. Anything that poses a hazard.

Take a look at your home and see if there are tripping hazards, housekeeping that needs to be done or railings that need to be put up.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as they say, but preventing a claim saves money in the short term and the long run for everyone, both in deductibles and long term insurance increases.
Thanks everyone!

When you are an insurance nerd, things like this are very exciting. We need to build for the weather we have, not what we wish we had. The cost is minimal for a significant reduction in insurance costs down the road. Its great to see change is happening.

The progressive building practice aims to reduce repair costs, insurance claims and disruption for homeowners.

This is Manitoba but Saskatchewan has the same type of investigation unit. Fraud is one of the reasons that insurance is so high. The ability of adjustors and investigators is only getting better as technology increases. Fire investigations are getting significantly better as well.
After any claim, it is important to be truthful in all dealings with the adjustors and your broker.
You might not realize you're on camera starting your semi on fire, but you are and apparently karma is really quick.
One of the ways you can keep rates low is to be honest with your claims and to report it when others are not being as truthful.

A claimant who suffered severe burns after an intentionally set truck fire was one of Manitoba Public Insurance’s Top 5 fraud cases in 2025.

We will be closed today at noon and will reopen on Friday Jan 2 at 9 am.
I'm taking a couple days off so I (Danah) won't be in the office on Friday but Cindy, Davies and Johnelle will all be available.

I want to thank all of our clients for their support in 2025 and during our transition. Being able to say that this brokerage is locally owned and operated is a great thing and unfortunately getting more rare as time goes on. I'm really glad that everyone has supported me in making this dream come true.

Happy New Year everyone! May 2026 be everything you want it to be!
