SABS Series - Post 2

Medical, Rehabilitation & Attendant Care benefits remain MANDATORY in every Ontario auto policy.

These cover:
• Treatment and recovery costs
• Therapy and rehab
• Personal care after an injury

Your auto policy will be the FIRST PAYOR after an accident excluding medications, subject to the standard limit. Optional limits are available.

So while more coverages are becoming optional…this remains your core protection. The real question is what you have in place around it.

**Policies renewing after July 1, 2026 will renew automatically with current coverage and limits unless you agree in writing to decline certain SABs or make changes to them.

The descriptions of statutory accident benefits contained in these documents provide only a summary of the benefits set out in Ontario Regulation 34/10 (the “SABS”). Do not rely solely on this summary; for complete details, refer directly to the SABS and discuss with your broker.

SABS Series - Post 1

Ontario Accident Benefits won't automatically cover everyone anymore.

As of July 1, OPTIONAL benefits are limited to specific people only.

Optional benefits will ONLY apply to:

• The named insured
• Their spouse
• Their dependents
• Drivers specifically listed on the policy

If someone isn’t in one of these categories, they are not covered. This is important for companies who allow passengers in the vehicles such as family members or other employees who may not be a listed driver but may be passengers.

It’s worth reviewing who is actually listed vs who is driving.

Ontario Accident Benefits Series – What is changing July 1, 2026?

Business owners, this impacts you more than you think.

As of July 1, Accident Benefits in Ontario auto policies are changing.

What used to be automatically included may now be optional.

That means:
✔ Less built-in protection
✔ More decisions at renewal
✔ More risk if nothing is reviewed

I’ll break it down over the next few posts.

Excited to share a look at the team behind the work!

Commercial insurance shouldn’t feel transactional. It should feel structured, proactive, and supported by people who understand your business.

At BrokerLink, I’m fortunate to work alongside a team that makes that possible every day. From strategy and market negotiations to day-to-day service and claims support, we work together to make sure our clients are protected and taken care of at every stage.

Most business owners don’t realize how their insurance actually works until something goes wrong. That’s exactly what we try to change. Our goal is simple: provide clear advice, stay ahead of risk, and make insurance one less thing business owners have to worry about.

If you’re a business owner and want to understand how your current program stacks up, I’m always happy to have a conversation.

Met with two different clients last week and both greeted me with a hug instead of a handshake. You can’t fake that kind of relationship.

We talked about their operations, their businesses, what’s working, what’s challenging… and mixed in some real, everyday conversation too. That’s where the connection happens.

It’s never just about policies and coverage. It’s about understanding the people behind the business and showing up for them in a way that matters.

Days like this remind me that when you focus on service, knowledge, and consistency, the relationships take care of themselves.

Grateful for clients who trust me with their business.

Ever feel like insurance questions get…a little excessive?

“What exactly do you do?”
“How do you do it?”
“Who’s doing the work?”
“Where is it happening?”

It’s not just paperwork, it’s everything.

Insurers aren’t just pricing your business. They’re pricing your day-to-day reality.

Two companies can be in the same industry and have completely different risk profiles:

• One subcontracts everything, the other does not
• One has strong safety protocols, the other is reactive
• One takes on complex jobs, the other sticks to routine work

On paper, they look similar. In reality, they’re not even close.

This is where a lot of businesses get caught. If your operations aren’t clearly explained, insurers will assume the worst and price (or decline) accordingly.

Our role is to translate what you actually do into something underwriters understand, accurately and strategically. We write your "story" together.
Because the better your story is told, the better your outcome.

Great morning at the Techo-Bloc Hardscaper Showcase.

Thank you to Lindsey McGarry at ALM Construction & Landscaping INC. for the invite. I always appreciate the opportunity to step into the field and connect beyond emails and calls.

There’s real value in getting in front of the products, technologies, and people shaping the hardscape space. From live demos to conversations at the booths, it was a chance to strengthen relationships, make a few long-overdue in-person introductions, and better understand what’s evolving for the contractors I work with every day.

Events like this reinforce how much innovation is happening, not just in materials, but in how projects are designed, built, and delivered.

And yes… it may have also sparked a few ideas for my own backyard project.

Looking forward to continuing these conversations and bringing more insight back to my clients.

Spring is around the corner, which means landscape contractors are gearing up for another busy season.

With that comes increased equipment movement, new job sites, and often… gaps in coverage that haven’t been revisited since last year.

A few things worth double-checking before the season ramps up:

• Are all newly acquired equipment, vehicles and trailers scheduled?
• Is subcontracting exposure properly disclosed?
• Are you clear on who’s responsible for liability on shared job sites?

If you’re in landscaping or the trades, now is the time to make sure your coverage is keeping up with your operations, not lagging behind them.

One of the best parts of this industry is when clients take a moment to recognize the team behind the scenes.

Today we received this message from a client:

“I just wanted to take the time to acknowledge your team. You have really stepped up the past few days when we needed stuff – I asked for this about 12 minutes ago – can’t get better service than that.”

Insurance is often only noticed when something goes wrong or when something is needed urgently. That’s why responsiveness matters.

Proud to work alongside teammates like Angela Sakiyama and Liam McKee to step up when it counts. Great service is always a team effort.
