Today is and this year's theme happens to be "Mental Health at Work", which is very near and dear to our missions and core values at Mosley Group Benefits Inc. and The GroupBenefitz Platform Inc.. While healthy working environments can help build and maintain the mental health and resiliency of their employees, unhealthy working environments can harm the mental health of their employees which impacts their family life outside of work as well.
Today we are called upon by the World Health Organization to think about our work environment, its impact on the mental health of our staff, and what we are doing to support our teammates when they are coping with difficulties. Support can be free....such as recognizing others and checking in with staff and peers, but then there are more serious issues that may require clinical interventions and outsourcing support becomes more appropriate and effective. Without professional support available, it is difficult for individuals who are financially vulnerable to complete a treatment cycle. It typically takes 8 sessions with a professional counsellor to have an impact on behaviour, and depending on the type of counsellor this might cost between $1,000-$2,000 for a round of treatment.
The good news is that we are at the beginning of a modernization of the benefits industry, and we are seeing some of the best corporate mental health programming we've ever seen emerge. These new programs enable companies to effectively and affordably support staff with longer term treatment models regardless of where they are on a mental health journey (Healthy-Coping-Illness/Disability-Recovery) and the individual's ability to pay does not impact whether they receive the treatment they need.
In my opinion, no one describes the value of counselling better than Dr. Warren Shepell himself - today is a good day to take 6 minutes to watch this: https://vimeo.com/794340540/d3822e7093
