Trump Defeated!
Democrats Take Congress
Democrats have won control of both chambers of Congress, delivering a major political setback to Donald Trump. Despite the election results, Canada says it has no plans to change its trade strategy with Washington.
On November 4, Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc confirmed that negotiations with the Trump administration will continue, focusing on reducing tariffs on automobiles, steel, aluminum, and lumber.
Prime Minister Mark Carney noted signs of progress, saying Washington has softened some of its demands and offered better terms. Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford welcomed the Democrats’ victory.
However, the new Congress will not take office until January 2027, and Trump will retain his executive powers and presidential veto. While the Democratic victory could increase pressure on the White House, an immediate end to the Canada-U.S. trade dispute remains unlikely.
