I recently traveled to Quebec from Toronto and initially considered driving. However, after doing the math, I realized that flying would be more economical for two people.
Here's the breakdown:
* Driving: Suv with winter tires
* Total trip time: 8 hours without any stops
* Fuel costs: 93 liters x $1.57/liter = $146.01
* Food and drinks: $50 per person x 2 people = $100
* Wear and tear: $0.20/km x 800 km = $160
* Total one-way cost: $146.01 + $100 + $160 = $406.01
* Total round-trip cost for two people: $406.01 x 2 = $812.02
* Flying:
* Total trip time: 1.5 hours
* Cheapest round-trip tickets: $236 per person
* Taxes and fees: $270 per person
* Airport transportation (Uber/taxi): $45 per person x 2 = $90
* Total round-trip cost for two people: ($270 + $45) x 2 = $630
Flying ended up being $182 cheaper for us.
Of course, these numbers can vary. Frequent flyers can benefit from discounts and points. Alternatively, getting a ride to the airport from a family member can significantly reduce costs.
Ultimately, I'm glad I chose to fly. Saving 7 hours of driving time allowed me to enjoy my trip much more.
Have you ever experienced a similar situation where you saved money on a trip? I'd love to hear your stories!
