The "set it and forget it" trap

Something worth checking if it's been a few years: has your coverage kept up with your life? A policy set up before a mortgage, a second kid, or a new business often no longer matches what your family would actually need today.

Insurance isn't a one-time decision — it's worth revisiting after any major life change.

If you can't remember the last time you checked yours, that's a good sign it's time. Happy to do a free review, no obligation.

Business owners — the key-person question

Quick one for business owners: if you or a key partner were suddenly out of the picture, does the business have a plan for that, or does everything just... stop?

Key-person insurance exists specifically to keep a business running — covering a hiring gap, a loan, or a partner buyout — while things get sorted out.

If you've never thought this through, it's worth a conversation. No pressure, just want to make sure it's on your radar.

New parents — the question worth asking early

Here's something worth asking in the first year of a new baby, not the fifth: if something happened to either parent, would the other be able to keep the mortgage, childcare, and daily life running on one income?

It's not a fun question, but it's a fast one to answer, and term coverage while you're young and healthy tends to be the most affordable it will ever be.

If you want to see real numbers for your situation, I'm happy to put something together — no pressure either way.

the beneficiary form from 2014

A client of mine recently found the beneficiary form on an old policy still listed an ex — he'd meant to update it for years and just never got around to it. An easy fix, but only because he caught it before it mattered.

Beneficiary forms are one of those things nobody thinks to check unless prompted.

If it's been a while since you've looked at yours, it takes two minutes. Happy to help if you're not sure how.

The group life coverage cliff

Something a lot of employees don't realize: group life insurance through work usually ends the day you leave that job — whether you quit, get laid off, or retire. It doesn't travel with you.

If your only coverage is through your employer, that's worth knowing before you ever need it.

Want to see what it'd cost to have coverage that's actually yours, no matter where you work? Send me a message.

Self-employed — the piece nobody sets up for you

If you're self-employed, nobody is automatically enrolling you in group life or disability coverage the way an employer would. It's easy to get years into running a business before realizing that gap exists.

Worth a quick check: if you were out of commission for 3 months, what actually happens to your household?

Happy to help you think through it — no pressure, just a real conversation.

The stay-at-home parent value question

Something worth asking if you're the one managing the household: what would it actually cost to replace everything you do — childcare, meals, school logistics, doctor's appointments — if something happened to you?

A lot of families insure the income-earner heavily and skip the at-home parent almost entirely, because there's no paycheck to point to. The replacement cost is still real.

If you've never run that number, I'm happy to walk through it with you — just a conversation, no pressure.

Myth-bust: "OHIP covers everything"

Myth: If I get seriously ill, OHIP has me covered.

Reality: OHIP is genuinely excellent for hospital care — but it doesn't cover lost income, private treatment options, home modifications, or the everyday bills that don't pause while you recover.

Critical illness insurance is built for exactly that gap: a tax-free lump sum you can use however your recovery actually requires.

True or false — did you think OHIP covered all of this? Tell me below. 👇

Critical illness — the gap nobody mentions

Here's a fact that surprises most people: your health benefits at work almost never cover income loss during a serious illness — just medications and paramedical visits. If you're off work for treatment, your mortgage and bills don't pause.

Critical illness insurance is built for exactly that gap — a lump sum paid to you, not your provider, that you can use however your family actually needs it.

Curious what that would look like for your situation? Happy to run the numbers, no pressure.

Smart homeowners ask this

Smart homeowners ask their bank one question before accepting the mortgage insurance offer: "Is my premium locked in, or can it increase as I get older?"

Most people assume the number they signed up for is the number they'll always pay. With bank mortgage insurance, that's often not true.

If you want to know what your own answer would be, send me a message — takes about 15 minutes to check.
