Your mortgage could get more expensive before it gets cheaper.

Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem warned this weekend that oil prices are pushing inflation back up, and markets now expect a full percentage point of rate hikes over the next year. Meanwhile StatCan drops the September inflation number Monday, with economists expecting 3.2%. Canada's housing market already cooled in September as fixed rates climbed.

Your RRSP must convert to a RRIF by December 31 of the year you turn 71, and minimum withdrawals become mandatory every year after, taxed as ordinary income. The CRA prescribed factor at 71 is 5.28%. Illustration: a $400,000 RRIF means a $21,120 forced minimum withdrawal in year one, whether you need it or not.
That forced income can also push you into a higher bracket and trigger the OAS clawback. Plan early: strategic RRSP drawdowns in your 60s and the younger-spouse age election can both reduce the bite.

Weekend market check. Friday's close: the TSX finished the week up 1.44% at 36,176, the loonie was the strongest major currency of the week, and oil touched $100. The big one is Monday at 8:30am, Canada's September inflation number. Polls say 3.2%. That number decides whether the Bank of Canada hikes on October 28. What is your call, hot or cool?

OAS pays up to about $9,156/year at 65, but the recovery tax claws back 15 cents per dollar of net income above $95,323 (2026 figures). Illustration: $125,000 of net income in retirement means ($125,000 - $95,323) x 15% = about $4,452 of OAS clawed back for the year.
Protect it legally: split eligible pension income with a spouse, favour TFSA withdrawals (invisible to the clawback), or defer OAS to 70 if you are still earning.
