Unfortunately, not everyone wants your help and not everyone should get it! Focus on where you bring the most value

You spent 20 years building your business. But have you decided who gets the money when you’re gone?

Imagine two business owners.

Both are 50 years old.

Both have worked incredibly hard, built successful corporations, accumulated significant assets, and created wealth that could outlive them.

But there’s one major difference.

Business Owner A has spent years focusing on growing the business, minimizing taxes, and accumulating wealth inside the corporation.

Estate planning? That’s something to worry about later.

Business Owner B has done all of that too.

But somewhere along the way, they asked a different question:

“If something happens to me tomorrow, how will the wealth I’ve built actually get into the hands of the people I love?”

That question changed how they approached their financial planning.

They started thinking about:

* Who would inherit their corporate assets.
* How potential taxes and liabilities would be funded.
* Whether their family would need to sell assets to access cash.
* How corporate-owned life insurance and the Capital Dividend Account could potentially help transfer wealth more tax-efficiently.
* How to coordinate their insurance, corporate structure, and estate documents.

Here’s something I wish more business owners understood:

Building wealth and transferring wealth are two very different financial responsibilities.

You can be incredibly successful at the first and still leave your family with unnecessary complications when it comes to the second.

And here’s the interesting part.

You don’t have to wait until you’re 60 or 70 to start thinking about this.

In fact, some of the most important estate planning decisions are better explored while you’re younger, healthy, and still actively building your business.

As an Insurance Advisor working with business owners and incorporated professionals, I believe one of the biggest financial risks isn’t necessarily failing to accumulate wealth.

It’s accumulating wealth without a clear plan for what happens to it when you’re no longer here.

So here’s my question for business owners:

If something happened to you tomorrow, would your family inherit a well-structured financial legacy

Having an accountant doesn’t automatically mean you’re doing tax planning! 👀

I find that many business owners and incorporated professionals don’t realize this until it’s too late.

You pay your accountant to file your corporate taxes every year, so naturally, you assume someone is also looking for ways to help you save taxes and build wealth more efficiently.

But here’s the problem…

📌 Tax filing looks at what you’ve already done.

📌 Tax planning looks at what you should be doing next.

And there’s a BIG difference!

Who’s helping you decide how to pay yourself from your corporation?

What happens to all that money accumulating inside your business?

How will you access it in retirement without paying more taxes than necessary?

And what happens to that wealth when you’re no longer here?

These are conversations that should happen long before tax season.

Your accountant is an important part of your financial team, but you need to make sure you’re actually getting strategic tax planning, not just tax filing.

Because making money is one thing. Keeping more of it and transferring it efficiently is another.

💬 Business owners, let me ask you: Does your accountant proactively discuss tax-saving strategies with you, or do you only hear from them when it’s time to file your taxes?

Sometimes, the best learning happens when advisors get the opportunity to ask the hard questions.

Last Thursday, I had the pleasure of visiting Co-operators’ head office in Guelph, courtesy of Co-operators and Greatway Financial.

It wasn’t just another product training session.

It was an opportunity to connect, relax, learn from other advisors, and, most importantly, ask some probing questions about how we can better serve our clients.

One thing I particularly appreciated was the conversation around solutions for business owners.

From business insurance that helps protect companies against unexpected financial disruptions to corporate-owned permanent life insurance that can support long-term, tax-efficient wealth accumulation and estate planning, there is so much value in understanding how these solutions fit into a business owner’s overall financial strategy.

But my personal highlight?

I got to experience this alongside a fellow advisor on my team.

For me, that was a reminder that while I’m helping clients build and protect their financial futures, I’m also building a team that is growing, learning, and developing together.

A big thank you to Co-operators and Greatway Financial for creating an environment where advisors could ask questions, share experiences, and discuss the support we need to serve our clients better.

As we wrap up another week, here’s something I’m curious about:

For business owners in my network, what concerns you more today: protecting the business you’ve built or making sure the wealth you’re building works for you beyond the business?

Happy Thanksgiving Weekend!

Forward thinking is important when it comes to a Corporate wealth strategy!

It’s not just about building tax efficient wealth for retirement, it’s also about legacy planning and ensuring that money gets to who it was intended for in a tax efficient manner!

Yesterday, over coffee, a friend drew two circles on a piece of paper.

And somehow, those two circles captured one of the biggest lessons I’ve received about building a business.

My friend had built a successful career in financial services before eventually stepping away to serve as a full-time minister.

So when he spoke, I listened.

He pointed to the first circle.

A big circle labelled LIFE, with a much smaller circle inside labelled BUSINESS.

“This,” he said, “is what attracts many people to this business.”

The idea of building something that gives you more control over your time. More freedom. More opportunities. More capacity to provide for your family and enjoy your life.

Then he pointed to the second circle.

A big circle labelled BUSINESS, with a tiny circle inside labelled LIFE.

“But this,” he said, “is what many people eventually build.”

That stayed with me.

Because somewhere along the journey of building a successful business, it can become very easy to allow the business to consume the very life it was supposed to support.

More clients.
More appointments.
More calls.
More targets.
More chasing.

His advice to me was simple:

Decide who you are best positioned to help — and focus on helping those people exceptionally well.

You don’t have to chase everybody.

You don’t have to respond to every opportunity.

And you certainly don’t have to build your business around all the noise happening around you.

For me, that means becoming increasingly intentional about serving the people I believe I can create the most value for — particularly business owners and incorporated professionals who need help thinking through protection, wealth, retirement and legacy planning.

The goal isn’t simply to build a bigger business.

It’s to build a focused business that supports a meaningful life.

I took a picture of those two circles because I have a feeling I’ll need to remind myself of this lesson many times along the journey.

Build the business. But don’t forget what you’re building it for.

What does your circle look like right now?

A business owner once said to me:

“I’ve spent 20 years building my corporation. If something happens to me, the money simply goes to my family… right?”

Not quite.

Imagine a business owner has $1 million accumulated inside the corporation.

That money may represent years of long hours, missed weekends, calculated risks and disciplined saving.

But here’s the question many incorporated professionals never stop to ask:

What happens to that $1 million when I die?

Getting money from a corporation into the hands of your family can have very different tax consequences depending on how the assets are structured and how the estate is planned.

That means building wealth inside your corporation is only one part of the job.

You also need a strategy for getting that wealth out efficiently — especially when it eventually passes to the next generation.

This is one reason corporate-owned life insurance can play an important role in estate planning.

When structured properly, the death benefit received by the corporation can create a credit to the Capital Dividend Account (CDA), potentially allowing significant amounts to be distributed to shareholders or the estate as a tax-free capital dividend.

The goal isn’t simply to leave more money behind.

It is to make sure more of what you spent your lifetime building actually reaches the people you built it for.

If you own an incorporated business or professional corporation, ask yourself:

“If I died tomorrow, do I actually know how the money in my corporation gets to my family?”

If the answer is “I’m not sure,” that may be a conversation worth having.
