What’s the difference between a payment hold and a reserve?

A payment hold is usually temporary and connected to a specific transaction or account review. A reserve is an ongoing arrangement where a portion of your funds may be retained to cover potential chargebacks or losses.

If one expected deposit is missing, it may be a temporary hold. If funds are regularly being withheld, check your merchant agreement to understand whether a reserve applies and how those funds are released.

Wondering why a card payment hasn’t reached your bank account yet?

When a payment is approved, it means the transaction has been authorized, but the money still needs to move through clearing and settlement.

Your deposit timing can depend on your merchant agreement, settlement cut-off times, weekends, statutory holidays, and your financial institution. 💳

Many Canadian businesses receive next-business-day funding, but it isn’t guaranteed for every merchant. Knowing your regular funding schedule can help you manage cash flow and recognize when a deposit is genuinely late.

You’ve made the sale, the payment was approved... so where’s the money?

A delayed deposit doesn’t always mean your funds are being held. Settlement cut-off times, weekends, banking delays, account reviews and other factors can all affect when money reaches your account.

Our latest blog breaks down why payment processors may delay or hold funds, the difference between a hold and a reserve, and what you can do when a deposit doesn’t arrive as expected.
