Our goal to make economic policy accessible, digestible, and relevant has always been clear. Too often, the national budget feels distant because of numbers, jargon, and announcements that donโ€™t connect to everyday lived realities.

Beyond discussion, we introduced a structured interactive segment where participants curated concrete policy recommendations. Rather than passive attendance, young people worked through real issues: employment, SMEs, education, cost of living and were then given teh opportunity to present their proposals.

These recommendations will not end with this event. They will be compiled over time, alongside contributions from future engagements, to form a broader Youth Budget Position Summary that reflects consistent youth perspectives and lived experiences.

Impact is and should be measured by whether people leave thinking differently, asking sharper questions, and feeling more equipped to engage with national issues.

This was a meaningful step forward and part of a longer journey to strengthening economic literacy and youth participation in governance.

We believe every young person deserves to understand the economy that shapes their life.

The Youth Ledger is building a generation of informed, confident, and policy-literate young leaders in Botswana.

This is where youth voices meet national conversations.
This is where understanding becomes influence.

Last week, our Founder Peter Siele Jr. had the honour of presenting at the CSO Mentorship Programme Launch, alongside civil society leaders, NGOs, and diplomatic partners including the Embassy of Ukraine.

Our presentation focused on a critical challenge:

Youth participation in governance often stops at attendance, but true impact requires youth involvement in decision-making and leadership.

We shared a framework for how civil society organizations can build sustainable pipelines for youth into governance:

1๏ธโƒฃ ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป โ€“ enabling young people to contribute meaningfully to programs and initiatives
2๏ธโƒฃ ๐—œ๐—ป๐—ณ๐—น๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—ฒ โ€“ ensuring youth voices shape priorities and outcomes
3๏ธโƒฃ ๐——๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป-๐— ๐—ฎ๐—ธ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด โ€“ integrating youth into committees, boards, and strategic planning
4๏ธโƒฃ ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฝ โ€“ empowering youth to lead initiatives, represent organizations, and mentor the next generation

The event underscored an important truth:

When CSOs intentionally include youth in operations and decision-making, we are not only strengthening organizations but also building the leaders of today and tomorrow.

At ๐—ง๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฌ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ต ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ฟ, we remain committed to empowering youth with economic literacy, policy understanding, and leadership skills, ensuring that young voices are not only heard but actively shaping the future of governance.

We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this conversation and look forward to partnering with organizations that share our vision of youth-led impact.

The Ledger is open. ๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿ“ˆ

Weโ€™re currently at Parliament awaiting the 2026 Budget Speech.

The Minister has signaled a 'new model' of economic discipline and a shift toward the National Development Plan 12 (NDP12). But the real question is:

Does this budget speak the language of the youth?

Tell me your expectations: Job creation in the tech/creative sectors? YDF reforms? Student allowance adjustments? ๐Ÿ‘€
