𝗪𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗘𝗧𝗣 𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁, 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲. 🧭

Our Executive Director spoke to the UB Economics Society on 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘀𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗮’𝘀 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗲: a ten-year plan with 186 projects, about P514 billion in targeted investment and 512,000+ jobs by 2036.

However, a plan is not a result. Using the Government’s own Mid-Year Review, we separated what has been promised, what has actually been implemented, and what the evidence still has to prove, from land titles and laws in force to the jobs data we are still waiting for.

The takeaway for young economists: watch jobs created, investment actually spent, non-diamond exports, private investment, fiscal buffers and reform delivery.

Yesterday, we had the privilege of contributing to an important conversation on 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘀𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗮’𝘀 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸: 𝗚𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵, 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗝𝗼𝗯𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 at the Botswana School of Business Sciences (BAC).

From government finances and interest rates to investment decisions, unemployment and economic diversification, we explored the economy from 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗲𝘀, connecting policy decisions to the realities they shape both within our borders are externally.

Tomorrow, 8 October 2026, Our Executive Director Peter Siele Jr. will moderate the Botswana’s Current Macroeconomic Outlook panel discussion hosted by the Botswana School of Business Sciences (BAC).

The discussion will bring together perspectives from the Bank of Botswana, Ministry of Finance, academia and independent economic commentary to examine some of the questions that matter most to Botswana right now.

Sixty years ago today, Botswana declared its independence and set out to write its own economic story from one of the poorest nations at the time to one of Africa's strongest growth stories, built on the promise of accountable governance and shared prosperity.

Sixty years of independence means sixty years of lessons in what it takes to build a nation and it's on us, the youth, to carry that forward with the same boldness our founders showed in 1966.

Here's to the next 60 years — informed, engaged, and building. 🇧🇼🤍

Yesterday we joined the Mokolodi Cleanup, organised by ReTsayaEfe 🌱

Environmental degradation is an economic issue that affects land, tourism, health and the opportunities available to the next generation, and young people are the ones who will inherit those costs. So it matters that we are also the ones showing up to be part of the conversation and the groundwork.

Well done to the organisers and every volunteer who made the day happen. 👏🏾

🎙️ 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝘁: 𝗞𝗶𝘁𝘀𝗼 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗵𝗶𝗿𝗮

Guiding our inaugural 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 conversation is Kitso Thihira. A governance researcher, youth advocate, and Lead for The Youth Ledger's 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 & 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺.

Kitso holds a BA double major in Environmental Science and Sociology from the University of Botswana, and currently serves as Lead Researcher and Youth Governance Facilitator at PutYouthOn (YouthVox), and Script Writer and Manager for the GenUncut Podcast. He's also a 2026 Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Youth Leadership Trainee, with three years of NGO experience in civic education and constitutional rights outreach.

He moderates with a research-led, plain-language approach - turning policy complexity into something young people can actually use.

Rounding out our inaugural 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗟𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 lineup is Larona Michelle Otimile. A lawyer and climate policy advocate working at the intersection of environmental law, policy drafting, and community governance.

Michelle currently serves as Legal and Compliance Officer at Women in Energy Botswana, a research and drafting member of the Youth Climate Council Botswana, Head of MEL for the Bonn Climate Camp in Germany, and Chemicals, Waste & Pollution Working Group Lead at YOUNGO — bringing real policy-drafting experience straight into our conversation on sustainable finance.
