𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐮𝐥𝐚 𝐏𝐮𝐥𝐬𝐞 | 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 🇧🇼

Botswana's annual inflation eased to 𝟵.𝟰% in July, down from 𝟭𝟬.𝟳% in June. A 1.3 percentage point drop.

The slowdown came mainly from Transport, as pump prices for diesel and petrol fell in early July, easing pressure on household budgets after months of elevated costs.

In more technical terms, the 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅 fell 6.5% month-on-month (194.1 → 181.5), driven by an 11.7% drop in the 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘅, because diesel and petrol pump prices were cut by P4.12 and P2.31 per litre on 7 July. A genuine, absolute price decrease at the pump.

Still driving the numbers up are 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱𝘀 & 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 & 𝗡𝗼𝗻-𝗔𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗕𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀, which remain the next-largest contributors to the inflation rate.

What this means is that prices are still rising at slightly slower pace than in recent months. Your p**a still buys a little less than it did a year ago but the pace of that squeeze has lost a little momentum.

A message that stood out for us was that Africa’s trade ambitions will only be realized if our digital infrastructure, institutions, and businesses evolve together.

• it’s true that EVERY business needs a digital identity.

A website is therefore the foundation of credibility and participation in modern trade. E-commerce, digital payments, and customer engagement should be built from there.

• Trade barriers are often more administrative than commercial.

Inconsistent customs procedures, excessive documentation, and fragmented government processes continue to increase the cost of doing business. Digital integration across public institutions is crucial for curbing this.

• Lastly, We MUST believe in Botswana’s products because building a globally respected brand starts at home. Supporting local businesses, improving quality, and taking pride in what we produce are all part of building a competitive economy. 🇧🇼

The AfCFTA itself is an opportunity to rethink how we do business, modernize our institutions, and position Botswana as a competitive player in Africa’s single market.

We extend our appreciation to NATI for creating a platform where these important conversations can take place. The challenge now is to turn dialogue into implementation.

After May inflation ticked up to 10.7%, mostly fueled by transport costs, we finally have some massive relief at the pumps.

The Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) has announced a major downward adjustment in retail fuel prices, taking effect at midnight tonight (00:01 hrs, Tuesday, 07th July 2026).

Here is exactly how much you'll be saving per litre:

Unleaded Petrol 95: Down by 231 thebe. New price: 1821 thebe/litre.

𝗗𝗶𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗹 𝟱𝟬𝗽𝗽𝗺: Down by a massive 412 thebe. New price: 2093 thebe/litre.

𝐈𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐧: Down by 533 thebe. New price: 1833 thebe/litre.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴? 🌍

According to the official release from BERA, the drop comes down to a sharp decline in international oil markets during June 2026.

𝗚𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗳: Tensions in the Middle East eased following a preliminary peace agreement and MoU between warring parties, reducing global risk premiums.

𝗖𝗿𝘂𝗱𝗲 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗹𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲: Average Brent crude oil prices fell sharply by 18.6%, dropping from US$103.71 per barrel in May to US$84.43 per barrel in June.

This is a highly anticipated breathing room for consumers and local businesses alike. Because transport is a foundational cost for almost every sector, this substantial drop should help take some of the aggressive upward pressure off our domestic inflation rate in the coming months.

Upon receiving an invitation from Re Tsaya Efe, the TYL delegation was honoured to attend an insightful workshop on localising Botswana’s Vision 2036 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The programme struck a remarkable balance between empowering youth voices through a dynamic panel discussion and drawing on the wisdom of the keynote speaker, whose wealth of experience offered invaluable lessons, practical advice, and inspiration for the next generation of leaders.

We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to these important conversations and reaffirm our commitment to advancing sustainable development and the Vision 2036 agenda.

The Youth Ledger was honoured to attend the Future of Mining Summit held at Boipuso Hall, Fairgrounds, under the theme “Mining for Transformation: Economic Diversification & Shared Prosperity.”

The summit brought together government leaders, industry executives, financial institutions, and development partners to engage on the future of Botswana’s mining sector and its role in advancing economic diversification, value chain development, and inclusive growth.

Key discussions throughout the two-day engagement highlighted critical national priorities, including the expansion of mineral exploration beyond diamonds, strengthening local beneficiation, enhancing citizen economic participation, and accelerating SME development as a driver of economic transformation.

A particularly important theme was the need to strengthen Botswana’s SME ecosystem and address the structural gap between youth innovation and access to formal financing and institutional support.

As an emerging youth-led platform focused on bridging youth economic potential with institutional and investment ecosystems, The Youth Ledger views such engagements as essential in shaping its approach to research, dialogue, and programme development.

We are grateful for the opportunity to engage, learn, and connect with stakeholders across government, finance, and industry, and we look forward to contributing meaningfully to Botswana’s evolving economic transformation agenda.

With geopolitical tensions showing signs of easing, we spoke with BERA at the Future of Mining Summit 2026 to discuss what it could mean for Botswana’s fuel prices.

The Bank of Botswana has held the 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗲 (𝗠𝗼𝗣𝗥) at 5.5% with rising inflation and slow economic growth in both the global and domestic economy. A phenomenon known as 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

The specific type of inflation currently faced by the country is predominantly supply driven due to disruptions in the oil supply chain as a result of the US-Iran War, among others.

The MoPR is therefore less effective since its primary effects are on consumer behaviour through the use of interest rates. With the need to anchor inflation expectations, the recalibrations of the MoPR in April 2026 remain significant enough to continue managing these expectations in the economy.

Peace talks between the US and Iran provide cautious optimism for de-escalation after the signing of an MoU to halt the war. Ultimately, the persistence of the economic shocks resulting from the war depend on the length and scalability of the middle-east conflict.

Global Economic Shocks from the US-Iran war continue to have persistent effects on Botswana’s domestic economy as Inflation continues to rise by 0.4% to 10.7% in May 2026.

This is largely driven by Transport at 7.1%, Miscellaneous goods & services at 1.1% and Food & Non-alcoholic Beverages at 0.9%.

Rural Villages continue to receive the highest inflationary pressures at 12.1% compared to 10.5% in Urban Villages. A disparity we attribute to the higher distribution costs in Transport as a result of longer distances covered along the supply chain to rural villages.
