GOVERNMENT OF BOTSWANA REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO PROTECTING AND ADVANCING THE LOCAL DIAMOND BENEFICIATION SECTOR
GABORONE, BOTSWANA - The Ministry of Minerals and Energy is aware of recent reports regarding potential duty-free access for diamond products into the United States market and the potential implications for global diamond processing industries.
This development, while still subject to final confirmation from U.S. authorities, is expected to restore market opportunities for the downstream diamond industry after a period of elevated tariffs that contributed to a contraction in exports to the U.S. market.
Botswana has invested strategically in diamond beneficiation, which enables meaningful job creation, skills development, and local value addition, making it essential as part of its economic transformation agenda. The Ministry recognises the importance of ensuring that international trade arrangements support, rather than disadvantage, emerging beneficiation centres.
The Ministry reaffirms that high-level international government-to-government engagements are ongoing with key partners to explore pathways that preserve and advance fairness in the global diamond trade and protect the competitiveness of Botswana’s diamond sector. These discussions are progressing positively and are being advanced with sensitivity to the sequencing and timing of broader U.S. trade negotiations with other major economies, which have influenced Botswana’s engagement.
The Ministry remains confident in Botswana’s positioning as a trusted global diamond partner, underpinned by ethical sourcing, regulatory integrity, and a proven beneficiation model. Engagements with industry stakeholders and international partners will continue, and updates will be communicated to advance investor confidence, sustain industry growth, and promote its position as a globally competitive natural diamond centre.
