Expense Tracking

Tracking your expenses against your income gives your awareness and power to change your financial situation.

We have reserved Sundays as the day we sit down and record all our expenses for the week and track them against the income we have allocated to each spending category.

How we achieve this.

1. Everytime we make a purchase we keep the receipts safely.

2. Sundays we take all the receipts out and group them by dates.

3. We then record the amounts on each receipt under the relevant spending category.

4. The recorded amount is then subtracted from the balance of the allocated amount.

5. After doing this you will know exactly the amount of money you have left under each category.

6. We then get rid of the receipt except the important ones.

This also helps with decluttering your hand bags or purse, you become more organized and in control.

Making a budget is very simple, anyone can do it. But following a budget and sticking to it, can be much harder.

It takes discipline.

TIPS ON BUDGETING

Creating Your Budget may sound complicated, but all you need to do to get started is set aside some time and get organised—the benefits will make the effort worthwhile.

Every good budget is born out of clear and precise financial goals. Financial goals are objectives you want achieve financially over a defined period. They may include things such as getting out of debt completely, creating multiple income streams, planning for early retirement, achieving financial freedom, having enough insurance to cover for contingencies etc. Without these goals, it becomes extremely difficult for one to set a solid financial goal, it is therefore very important that you define where you want to be financially and create a solid budget plan to help you get there.

1. Be analytical about your budget. When drawing up a budget the most obvious and important thing to do is to make a “needs” and “wants” list. This will help you evaluate what you can cut back on. When you start spending less on things that you do not need your ability to save will improve significantly.

2. Get into the habit of spending what is left after saving. This mindset shift will completely change your outlook on money. You can start by saving minimum of 10% of your salary immediately after receiving it. As you get better at this, you can gradually increase the percentage you want to save. Banks provide a number of tools that can help you facilitate this, for example, you can set up a stop order or an automatic transfer between your cheque and savings account. This eliminates the hassle involved in manually moving money between accounts.

3. Get everyone on onboard! Make sure your spouse and kids understand that you are going to be making cuts on certain expenditures that will affect their lifestyles. Make sure your friends understand that you will not be doing certain activities that you used to do with them. This makes the whole process of budgeting easier.

4. A budget needs to be captured and tracked weekly. You can capture it on an excel sheet in your computer/laptop or download a number of budgeting apps which are available on the android app store or apple store. Monitoring your expenditures helps you to keep your eye on the prize.

5. Use the 24-hour rule! The 24-hour rule is basically taking 24 hours to think over non-essential purchases. This helps to avoid purchasing expensive or unnecessary items on impulse and can help you save money and stay in budget.

6. Once you're free from paying interest on your debt, that money can then be used for your savings. A personal line of credit is just one option for consolidating debt so you can better pay it off.

7. Be strict in allocating yourself an entertainment budget and don’t go above it. Being sociable doesn't have to be expensive -think nights in with housemates, free events at your union or two-for-one cinema nights.

8. Remember that the goal of budgeting is to spend less than we make and as a result save money!

This festive season should not leave your wallet empty. But that can only be possible if you take a few precautions on how to spend your money

Christmas bells are ringing both in mind and pockets. Plans are laid up some are SMART... (Specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and Time-bound) while others plan to pass through the season the way it comes. However, this should be the time when we prepare for 2019 and more years to come.
Let me share with you a few tips on how to have a fruitful season and learn how to prepare for the New Year.

Set goals
Life without goals is like playing a gamwithout a goal post. It does not motivate the player.
End of year gives us a chance to review and set financial goals that will be depicted in our achievements. You can set short, medium and long-term goals to help you rate yourself at the end of every cycle

Save
Yes, it is never too late to start saving. This is a time when some organisations give bonuses or tokens of appreciation especially if you are working in a formal organization. If you’re given this bonus, know that your employer has recognised the value in you added to the business throughout the year. Therefore, add value to your income by saving a bigger percentage and manage the spending with the monthly salary as you develop an investment plan.
And if you are in informal employment and you have made more sales than usual, put aside any extra income to help you increase on your capital base as you start a new year.

Have an emergency fund
All of us have unplanned occurrences in life which cannot be captured in our financial plans. This is the reason we need an emergency fund which caters for eventualities in our homes and our relatives. These may include; death of a relative or family member, chronic illnesses, accidents and others.

Spend wisely
Most of have a high spending appetite during the festive season. It is until we have consumed all the savings that we realise the mistakes we should have avoided in the beginning. This time, please spend more on necessities than luxurious items.

Avoid debts
When spending appetite is high, we sometimes find ourselves borrowing in order to fill the gap. However, this has its consequences that would drag you behind if not well-handled.
For example, if your budget can only accommodate your immediate family while in town, there is no need to travel up country for Christmas because it involves a lot of costs.

Pay yourself
Learn to say No. One must be wondering why No? I have realised in life that people who toil in their daily lives working and looking for money do not enjoy their sweat.
Avoid being the saviour of everyone’s problems, unless you have budgeted for it.
If you had planned and saved for a holiday, take days off, create time to relax and rejuvenate your body, mind and soul for 2019.
Lastly, try as much as possible to stick to your plans because if you fail, you are to blame.
