Harder than we think
Recovery is about more than healing. It is also about navigating the systems that surround us
Most people think the hardest part of burnout is collapsing
In my experience, that is often not true
For many people, the second battle begins after they leave work
"How are you doing?"
It seems like such a simple question
Even a caring one
But for someone recovering from burnout, it is often the beginning of something else
"Are you still off work?"
"When are you going back?"
"What do your doctors say?"
"How much longer will you be on sick leave?"
Almost nobody asks these questions with bad intentions
Yet, in my coaching practice, I see them trigger something profound
Not because people are insensitive
But because burnout is much more than exhaustion. It temporarily changes the way our nervous system interprets safety and threat.
And that is why, after the initial collapse, many people find themselves facing a second battle
Not against burnout itself
But against everything that follows.
