As the Insurance Advisernet Conference officially kicks off today, we’ve already settled into Sydney life with a relaxing first night.

When we were here over Christmas, one of our last dinners in Sydney was at Midden at the Opera House - so it seemed only fitting that it was our first dinner back this time around. And it didn’t disappoint.

Safe to say dinner was as much an experience as it was a meal.

Now it’s time for a few days of catching up with people from across the industry, learning plenty, and enjoying everything the IA Conference has to offer.

One of the things we love about running Arbor is that work and family don’t always have to be two completely separate worlds.

Insurance is very rarely sitting at the top of anyone's list of exciting Monday activities.

But if your renewal is coming up, your business has changed, you've signed a new contract, or you simply haven't looked at your cover properly for a while - move it a little higher up the list.

Then you can tick it off and move onto something far more exciting. Like a second coffee.

Things we don't necessarily recommend: Sitting down and reading your 100+ page insurance policy wording cover to cover.

Thankfully, that's kind of our job. You tell us what you do. We ask a ridiculous number of questions. We look at the options. And then we explain it to you in normal human language.

One of the things we've loved most since starting Arbor is becoming even more involved in the community we live and work in.

Whether we're sponsoring a local club, supporting a fundraiser, showing up to an event or simply choosing another local business when we need something - those little decisions add up.

Because behind every local business, sporting club and community organization are actual people giving their time, taking a chance and trying to build something. And we'd much rather be part of that than just have our logo sitting somewhere.

So here's your Saturday reminder:

It matters more than you probably realise.

It was an early start at Arbor this morning, getting through the emails and ticking a few things off before the day properly gets underway.

Now it’s time for a quick coffee, a debrief on where we’re both up to, what still needs to be wrapped up, and making sure everything is sorted before the weekend. Then we’re swapping the desks for lunch with Hunter Premium Funding and some fellow brokers.

One of the things we really value about this industry is the relationships behind it. Having great relationships with insurers, underwriters, premium funders and other brokers genuinely helps us do a better job for our clients. We’re very lucky to work with some incredibly knowledgeable people who have become more than just industry contacts - they’re friends too.

Not a bad way to wrap up the working week.

As we head towards the end of the week, here's a quick one:

If something happened to your business tonight…

👉 Do you know what you're insured for?
👉 Do you know your excess?
👉 Are your sums insured still enough?
👉 Have you bought equipment that hasn't been added?
👉 Has your business changed since you arranged the policy?

If the answer to most of those is… “Ummmm…” You’re definitely not alone.

But that's also a pretty good sign it's time for a review. Insurance shouldn't just be something you pay every year and forget about. It should still match the business you're actually running.

Farm insurance. Hobby farm insurance. And apparently… very large turkey insurance.

A little throwback to the Ekka and Chris making friends with one of the bigger residents.

It’s also a good reminder that not every property fits neatly into a standard home insurance policy.

One of our favourite things about running Arbor? Our days rarely look the same.

One minute we're reviewing a renewal. The next we're talking to an insurer about a tricky risk, meeting a client for lunch to run through their newest business venture, helping someone understand a contract, working through a new quote or answering a question that starts with:

“This might be a stupid question, but…”

For the record - it usually isn't.

Then somewhere in between there are school runs, coffees, community events, sport, meetings and the general chaos of running a family business.

Arbor was built because we wanted insurance to feel a little more personal.

Real conversations.
Straightforward explanations.
And people you can actually call when you need help.

Turns out, we quite like doing business this way.
