RETAINING WALLS – When is approval required?
Most councils require you to submit an application for approval when the wall height is going to be greater than 600mm.
Generally, if you are building them over 900mm high council will also ask for an engineer to design and sign off on them. Retaining walls can be build with out approval if they are under 600mm high, more than 1m off your boundary, located 40m away from a water body.
*Check with you local council or certifier/building surveyor. The most popular retaining wall we do for larger excavation on larger properties is sandstone quarry block walls. For smaller residential jobs, our most commonly requested retaining wall product is either concrete sleeper or treated pine timber sleepers.

We can come to site and work out the heights of the new walls required, detail the plans engage engineers (if required), submit the application for approval.

Already built them? We also do Building certificate applications for retrospective approvals (illegal builds).
