Homeless Christmas Drive

Homeless Christmas Drive Creating and providing care packages to those experiencing rough homeless in Sydney every Christmas and winter since 2017.

Our names are Eliza Hennessy and Samantha Bing, and we are two women who want to make a difference in the lives of as many men, women and children experiencing rough homelessness as we can. As you probably know, Christmas time can be an extremely stressful time for people, rushing around, last minute shopping, financial costs, holiday planning, etc. But as you also probably know it can also be an

extremely wonderful period of time, spending time with family and friends, holidays, surprising the children, lots of food and of course, Santa. Well, Christmas time can also be a stressful period for families and individuals who are experiencing homelessness. Not knowing where you will sleep night after night, couch surfing or sleeping in your car. Not knowing when your next meal or shower will be and not having any family or friends to spend Christmas with. Here at the Homeless Christmas Drive, we aim to relieve some of that stress and replace it with some love and Christmas spirit. In 2016, Eliza and myself began the Homeless Christmas Drive where we created care packages and delivered them to the homeless of the Sydney CBD on Christmas Eve. Thanks to the generosity of many we have been continuing to do this every year for the past 6 years, even expanding to a ‘Christmas in July’ Winter Drive. Our aim of the Homeless Christmas Drive is to provide the homeless of the Sydney to wake up on the happiest day of the year, Christmas morning, the same way we do, filled with love and happiness. The Homeless Christmas Drive is about hand delivering those experiencing rough homelessness in Sydney with the necessities of life. Objects such as deodorant, tissues, toothbrush, toothpaste, water bottles, hairbrushes, facial wipes, sanitary products, blankets, clothes and food, objects that we may take advantage of, but objects that are very much needed day to day. We hand deliver these packs, with a friendly smile and conversation. We have been touched by many stories and hardships and we are always learning and growing. We hope to constantly work on and improve the Homeless Christmas Drive to provide packs with items those experiencing homelessness need.
100% of the money raised in this campaign goes directly towards buying these necessities. The HCD is NOT a registered charity or organisation, just two women trying to make a positive change in this world, one small step at a time.

What if ending homelessness started with something as simple as saying hello?

When it comes to homelessness, it’s easy to feel like the problem is too big. That one person can’t make a difference.

But change rarely starts with grand gestures.

It starts with saying hello.
It starts with treating someone with dignity.
It starts with a coffee, a meal, a conversation, a donation, or simply choosing not to look away.

No single act will solve homelessness. But thousands of small acts of kindness, compassion and action can change lives.

As part of the Still Human campaign, I’m raising awareness and funds for frontline homelessness services that support people every day with meals, outreach, connection, dignity and hope.

If you’d like to be part of that change:

💛 Donate if you can
💛 Start a conversation about homelessness
💛 Show kindness to someone who may be doing it tough

Together, small actions become something powerful.

11 weeks until Homelessness Week 🧡

In 11 weeks, I’ll be spending 7 nights on the streets of Sydney to raise awareness and funds for people experiencing homelessness, and for the incredible frontline services supporting them every single day.

This campaign isn’t about pretending to understand someone else’s experience. It’s about listening, learning, raising awareness, and turning that awareness into action.

There are so many ways you can help:
💛 Donate
💛 Join me for an hour, a day, or even a night

Every conversation, donation, and share helps challenge misconceptions around homelessness and reminds people that no one should be invisible.

Thank you to everyone already supporting this campaign — we’re only just getting started!

“Homelessness won’t happen to me.”

It’s something a lot of people believe.

But the reality is — most of us are only one or two steps away from experiencing homelessness.
Job loss. A relationship breakdown. A medical diagnosis. Grief.
The kinds of things that happen every day, to ordinary people.

No one is immune.

And another myth?
“I can’t do anything about it.”

You can.

Change doesn’t always start with something big — it starts with small, human moments:
– Challenging the way we talk about homelessness
– Saying hello, and acknowledging someone’s existence
– Paying for a coffee or meal for someone who needs it
– Donating warm clothes, toiletries, or your time
– Supporting services that provide safe beds, meals, and care
– Even choosing long-term rentals over short-term stays, where possible

It all matters. More than you think.

In August this year, I’ll be spending 7 nights on the streets of Sydney — not to compare, but to better understand, and to raise funds and awareness for the people and services who are there every single day.

If you’ve ever thought “there’s nothing I can do” — this is your reminder that there is.

Donation tracker update!

So far, we’ve raised just over $2,000 — thank you.
We’re aiming for $100,000, and we still have a long way to go.

During Homelessness Week this August, I’ll be spending 7 nights on the streets of Sydney — experiencing a very small glimpse of what people facing rough homelessness go through every single night.

This isn’t just about awareness — it’s about action.

90% of funds raised will go directly to frontline services that are significantly under-resourced.
10% will support the Homeless Christmas Drive, now in its 10th year providing essential items to people experiencing homelessness.

If you can, please donate or share this with your network — it all makes a difference.

We asked people experiencing homelessness:
“What’s one thing you wish people understood?”

This video shares their answers — in their own words.

They’re not statistics.
They’re not stereotypes.
They are people — still human.

If this video resonates with you, please don’t keep it to yourself.
Share it with your friends, your workplace, your community.

These are voices that deserve to be heard.

This Homelessness Week, I’ll be sleeping on the streets of Sydney for 7 nights to raise awareness and funds.

If you’d like to join me for a night, please send me a message — I’d love to have you involved.
If not, you can still support by sharing this video, following the journey, or donating if you’re able.

We asked people experiencing rough homelessness:

“What’s one thing you wish other people understood?”

The answer was simple —
to be seen as still human.

This Homelessness Week, I’ll be sleeping on the streets of Sydney for 7 cold nights to raise awareness and funds for people experiencing homelessness.

This isn’t about recreating the experience — it’s about listening, learning, and helping create change.

If you’d like to join me for a night, please send me a message.
If you can’t, you can still support by following the journey, sharing this message, or donating if you’re able.

How you treat people who can do nothing for you says everything about you.

People experiencing homelessness are still human — still deserving of dignity, respect, and kindness.

One small act can make someone feel seen again.

Still Human — because everyone still matters.

Let’s talk about a myth I hear all the time:

“People choose to be homeless.”

They don’t.

Homelessness is rarely the result of a single decision — it’s often the result of a series of events and systemic barriers, including:
• family and domestic violence
• a lack of affordable housing
• job loss or the death of a household income earner
• financial hardship or an unexpected crisis, like medical expenses

Often, people experience homelessness when every other option has been exhausted.

In Australia, family and domestic violence is the leading cause of homelessness, followed closely by housing affordability, financial stress, and eviction.

When we believe homelessness is a choice, it becomes easier to judge, to look away, and to ignore the reality of what people are going through.

But homelessness is not a personal failure.
And no one chooses to lose their safety, stability, or home.

Understanding the truth doesn’t just correct misinformation —
it creates empathy. And empathy is what leads to action.

Because no one stops being human when they lose their home.

116,000 Australians experience homelessness every single night — and we know that number is rising.

Homelessness is not inevitable.
It is solvable.

But right now, we’re living in a system where people fall through the cracks — and too often, we keep walking past, hoping something will change.

It won’t.
Not unless we choose to change it.

Homelessness is deeply traumatic.
And for most people, it begins with another trauma — domestic violence, job loss, housing insecurity, a health crisis, or a system that fails when it’s needed most.

We can do better than this.

During Homelessness Week, I’ll be spending 7 nights sleeping on the streets — not to replicate the experience, but to raise awareness, start conversations, and fund real, frontline support.

If you want to understand this issue differently, stand with me.
If you want to make a difference, be part of this.

Because no one stops being human when they lose their home.
