Happy International Women’s Day. Celebrating the women who continue to build careers, support families, and shape the future around them.
“Mum, can we play working mums?” my toddler asked recently.
In the moment I felt a little sad. I never refer to myself as a working mum and my first thought was that my almost two year old had already experienced life with their solo parent balancing work and motherhood.
After I sent this photo to my parents they asked, “Why are you sad? You should be proud.”
And that made me stop and think.
Maybe my perception of myself as a working woman and a mother has been shaped by the less favourable parts of our world.
Maybe it was shaped by the person who once told me my career would fail if I chose to become a mum.
Maybe it was shaped by the expectations many women still face when balancing a career and motherhood.
Maybe it was shaped by social media constantly showing the “perfect mum” narrative.
But with a shift in perspective I realised something.
My toddler is lucky enough to grow up watching a woman building a career. A woman working hard, chasing goals and still creating a childhood full of love and joy.
So the next time you doubt yourself, stumble or feel defeated, take a moment to shift your perspective and remember just how far you have come.
To all the women, mums and everyone in between, keep showing up, keep breaking moulds and keep rewriting what strength looks like to you.
Happy International Women’s Day this Sunday.
