CPD Training: Crypto & Blockchain 101 for Family Law
Digital assets are starting to appear more often in family law matters, but many practitioners are still unsure how to approach them in practice.
Cryptocurrency is not just another asset class. It can be transferred quickly, held across multiple platforms, and in some cases not disclosed at all. Even small investments can grow significantly over time. In one matter, a three-year Bitcoin investment increased by approximately 448 percent and had a real impact on the property pool.
In this CPD session, we take a practical approach to understanding how crypto fits into family law work.
We will cover:
• What blockchain and crypto actually are in simple terms
• How digital assets are treated under Australian family law
• Where crypto is typically held, including wallets and exchanges
• Common signs that assets may be undisclosed
• How forensic tracing works in identifying holdings
• Why proper disclosure is critical and how courts respond when it is lacking
The focus is on giving you a clear, working understanding so you can better identify issues, ask the right questions, and manage matters involving digital assets with confidence.
