Is Swimming with Sharks like dealing with Banks?
I’m an avid diver and love swimming with sharks. I’ve been fortunate enough to experience with hundreds of sharks over the years. Last year - I was lucky enough to swim with this beautiful Lemon shark.
Most people’s reaction to diving with sharks is fear. All they know is the potential for the shark to attack. But for me, I’ve been diving with sharks for almost 40 years and have encountered hundreds if not thousands, of amazing shark encounters all over the world.
Not once have I ever felt threatened. I’ve been fortunate enough to swim Great Whites, Tigers Sharks, Hammerheads, Bronze Whalers, Blue Sharks, Black Tips, Lemon Sharks, Sand Bars, Wobbegongs, Grey Nurses and dozens of other species.
To most, this scares the living bejezus out of them. To me, I’ve studied sharks and swam with them my whole life. Sharks are like dogs, most are super friendly and curious. Like dogs, there are a few sharks you need to keep an eye on. And just like dogs, sharks also give visual signals if they aren’t happy with you. At which point they either leave or you do.
My point is - if you really know and understand sharks, like dogs, there is very rarely an issue.
Sharks are like banks.
I’m sure a few of you smile here. When you think about it, it’s the uncertainty, the fear of a negative outcome or the unknown which makes banks scary.
But they aren't scary – especially for those who know how they operate.
I’ve worked in finance for the last 20 years. To me, banks aren’t scary. I know how they operate. I know what credit managers want. I know what security the banks look for and I know what levers they pull if necessary.
I’ve also got a number of very good relationships with people at most of the banks. I know how to get things done. And if I don’t, I know people who can get things done.
Let me navigate the ocean of finance and banking with you. Let me take the unknown out of the situation and guide you. Let me use my experience to keep you safe from harm.
Skate Capital WA was born out of my love for the Sea and for my love for wanting to help people in finance.
Despite the perceived risks, divers who swim with sharks get to experience awe and wonder. It's a powerful and ever-lasting experience.
For Kate and I, helping people navigate the banking landscape on their way to achieving their financial goals is no different. Unravelling complex financial puzzles, securing a dream mortgage, and expanding business operations is a wonderful feeling and it’s why we do what we do.
Swimming with sharks and navigating financial waters share common threads: risk, adaptation, opportunity, trust, and discovery. Whether you’re a daring diver or a customer seeking finance, remember that being calm and knowing what you are dealing with matters. Embrace the challenge, learn from the facts, and appreciate the beauty—even when surrounded by sharks.
