A common question asked of me is, “Do I put my investments into cash?”.

The majority of Financial Planners would agree that moving investments into cash, firstly, does cement any losses that have occurred, and also, does not allow a lot of movement upward when if and when the markets recover. The only case for moving investments in this manner, would be if the investor felt that the market was entirely predictable (a very unlikely scenario).

Given the current geopolitical situation, particularly the confusing rhetoric coming from the Trump administration, it would be entirely incorrect to call this a predictable market.

Leaving your investments in line with your risk profile, is a discussion worth having with your Financial Planner.

The Compounding Effect of Rising Oil Prices

Notwithstanding the obvious inflationary factors pushing prices up in almost every industry, there is a coupling with rising interest rates because of rising prices causing inflation (not consumer over-spending that would ordinarily be the cause of interest rates rising). This in turn gives us a classic case for stagflation, where industries are challenged with economic pressure and GDP in turn is constricted, yet inflation continues to rise.

This is one of the most difficult situations for any government to work with, as the usual monetary policy and fiscal policy cannot solve a lack of GDP or reduce inflation easily. The outcome could very well be an extended recession.

Markets are, of course, reading this in share prices and now more than every is a good time to talk to your Financial Planner.

The Truth About Consolidation Loans

As affordability tightens, we see that unsecured debt is slightly on the rise in Australia.

In line with this, one of the most frequent questions I’m asked, is “Are consolidation loans worth it?”

Quite frequently, consolidation loans simply group the debt and sometimes extend the term of the loan, which may create a lesser monthly payment. However, it may not be the best economic move, particularly if you are extending the term. Other things to consider are: the fees associated with the changes and any lock in contracts to the new loan.

I would recommend doing a proper economic comparison, prior to entering into a consolidation loan, so that you are considering the economic facts, and not just the monthly outgoing.

I am in favour of zero interest balance transfers. However, with a caveat that these consolidations must be paid and not added to.
