After spending a lot of time conducting one-on-one interviews, I’ve recently moved back to group interviews while recruiting nationally for high-volume, similar roles.

I’d forgotten just how effective and enjoyable they can be.

Beyond the obvious efficiencies, group interviews create a unique environment where candidates can showcase skills that are often difficult to assess in a traditional interview setting. Communication, confidence, active listening, adaptability and collaboration all come to life.

One of my favourite observations has been watching candidates absolutely nail their elevator pitches. Seeing individuals introduce themselves with confidence, share their experience, and articulate what they bring to a role in just a few minutes is incredibly valuable.

What’s equally impressive is how quickly rapport begins to form. Candidates often start encouraging one another, building on each other’s responses, and creating a sense of team connection before they’ve even started the job.

For recruiters and hiring managers, group interviews provide a more authentic view of how people engage with others, while giving candidates an opportunity to stand out in ways that a resume simply can’t capture.

A reminder that sometimes the “old school” methods still have a lot of value.
