🏊‍♀️ Swimming – A Gentle and Beneficial Activity for Seniors

In Melbourne, almost every local council has a public swimming pool (council pool) offering discounted rates for seniors. It’s a wonderful activity worth considering.

Exercising in the water helps to:
✨ Reduce pressure on the knees and hips
✨ Ease joint and muscle pain
✨ Improve circulation and breathing
✨ Keep the body flexible without overexertion

Many pools also offer aqua exercise or hydrotherapy classes specifically designed for seniors. These sessions are guided, gentle, and generally safe and easy to follow.

It’s a great way to stay active, get out of the house, enjoy a change of environment, and even meet new friends — all while taking care of your health 💙

If you experience joint pain or are looking for a gentler alternative to walking, swimming may be a suitable option to try.

🌿 Activities for Seniors in Melbourne

If you or your loved ones would like to join community activities but aren’t sure where to start, here are a few suggestions. There are many programs organised by the City of Melbourne (link at the end of this post) as well as local community centres that seniors can explore, such as:

✨ Walking groups & gentle exercise classes (Chair exercises, Tai Chi, etc.)
✨ Health and nutrition information sessions
✨ Community gatherings, afternoon tea & social meet-ups
✨ Creative classes: painting, crafts, board games
✨ Swimming & water-based exercise at council pools – great for reducing joint pain

Participating in these activities not only helps maintain physical health but also brings joy and meaningful social connection 💛

👣 How Can a Podiatrist Support Foot Health?

A podiatrist is a qualified health professional specialising in the care of feet, ankles, and lower limbs. For seniors especially, proper foot care is very important, as even small issues such as thickened nails, cracked heels, or minor wounds (particularly for those with diabetes) can significantly affect daily mobility and comfort.

A podiatrist can assist with nail care (including thick or ingrown nails), treatment of corns and calluses, cracked heels, diabetic foot monitoring, footwear advice, and managing conditions such as heel pain or plantar fasciitis!

🍽️ Community Lunch – Meaningful Gatherings

In Melbourne, the City of Melbourne organises monthly community lunches for seniors. These gatherings give older adults a chance to enjoy a meal together, have conversations, connect with others, and add a little extra joy to everyday life.

Activities like this remind us that sometimes the most meaningful moments aren’t grand or complicated — they’re simply about sitting together, sharing a meal, enjoying a cup of tea, and talking about everyday life 💛

A monthly luncheon, including entertainment and lots of fun.

🏡 How to Find a Nursing Home in Your Local Area

If you or your family are considering a Residential Aged Care facility near where you live, you can search through the official My Aged Care website (link below).

Once you access the website, simply enter your suburb name, and the system will display nursing homes available in your area. Each facility is shown with a Star Rating, based on criteria such as staffing levels, compliance with regulations, and overall quality of care.

If you would like to learn more about a specific facility, you or your family can contact the provider directly to ask about arranging a tour, fees and additional charges, waiting list times, and daily living arrangements.

Reviewing information on My Aged Care and speaking directly with the facility will help you make a more informed decision.

💰How much do clients need to contribute when using the Support At Home package?

Many clients ask HATRUE:
“So how much do I need to pay?”

The answer is: It depends on each individual situation.
The contribution amount is based on each client’s income and the result of their Income Test.
• Full Age Pension recipients:
May pay very little, or in some cases $0 for certain services.
• Part Pension recipients or higher-income earners:
The Government will assess their specific income to determine the contribution amount, which typically ranges from 5% up to 80%, depending on the type of services used.
Because every situation is different, it is very important to check and clearly understand your contribution before starting services.
HATRUE HOME is ready to assist you if you have any questions about the Support At Home package or are looking for a suitable service provider.

☘️How much do clients need to contribute for each type of Support At Home service?

Not all services require the same level of contribution.
Support At Home services are divided into three main categories:
• Clinical care, such as Nursing services, Physiotherapy, and Occupational Therapy: this group of services is fully funded by the Government (100%), meaning there is no out-of-pocket cost.
• Personal care, such as assistance with showering and mobility: clients may be required to contribute a portion of the cost.
• Other everyday living supports, such as house cleaning, laundry, and meal preparation: clients may also need to contribute part of the cost, depending on their income level.

☘️Does everyone have to pay when using the Support At Home (SAH) package?

Many clients ask HATRUE:
“Do we have to pay for the Support At Home package now? How much do we need to contribute?”
The answer is: Not everyone pays the same amount.
When registering through My Aged Care, the government will conduct an Income Test and place clients into one of three categories:
• Full Pension recipients
• Part Pension recipients
• Self-funded retirees
The specific contribution amount depends on each client’s income level and the type of services used under the Support At Home package.
That’s why it’s very important to understand which category you fall into before starting services — this helps avoid unnecessary stress or confusion.
If you have any questions about your contribution or need assistance with Support At Home services, please contact HATRUE for free support and consultation.
