18% to 33%. What made the difference?

Back in 2016, only 18% of our loans went to women healthcare entrepreneurs.

Not because the need wasn’t there. Women make up about 67% of workers in the health sector in Africa. But structural barriers stood in the way. Collateral requirements. Limited access to banks. Barriers that kept qualified women out.

So, we launched our digital loans, removing traditional barriers including collateral requirements and started designing our approach around access and inclusion: we hosted dedicated events for women entrepreneurs and built programs that connect them to finance and business support.

The results speak for themselves: today, 33% of our loans go to women-led facilities.

Why does this matter? Because investing in women-owned health SMEs is not just about equity. When women get access to finance, entire communities benefit from better healthcare.

Ahead of International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating the women building these health systems and improving access to quality care.
